Just noticed whilst browsing another website (can't name it due to competition) that they have the 9800GTX listed as 'Due Soon' and with a price tag of (YOU CAN'T QUOTE THE PRICE EITHER !!!)

I was quite surprised by that, as I was expecting it to be much nearer the £250 mark.

So, do you guys reckon this would be a good buy at that price, or is the 8800GTS still better bang for buck?

Seems a bit low to me... I take it there's no "pre-order" button on the site? The final price may well change higher when stock becomes available. If not and that is the real price then that is a lot lower than I expected... would make a pleasant change!

No 'pre-order' button, but you can simply add it to your basket and pay for it. After that AFAIK they are obliged to sell it to you at that price, unless of course it is an error, which I don't think it is.

Only if they take the money from you are they obliged to sell it at that price.

Until they do there is no contract.

Still, seems about right to me, they can't really sell it much above an 8800GTS.

Well with factory-overclocked 8800GTX now available under £200, they wouldn't be able to get away with anything too extravagant I would have thought.

It's a pointless card, but I expect the 8800GTS 512 will go EOL soon and then if you want 9800GTX performance, you'll have to buy a 9800GTX at silly prices.

I think what happened was Nvidia were developing G9x for the 9800 series...they heard ATi were launching some decent new cards (the 38xx series) and released the 8800GT and GTS 512 to compete, when they were originally meant to be the new 9800GT and 9800GTX respectively.

I'm happy to rock a GTS 512 until the next big thing launches.

I don't understand how anyone could have expected it to cost £300, trying to sell an overclocked 8800GTS for twice the price would have been stupidity at it's finest.

Thats what they are doing, just hiking the prices of their old 8800's, in 2 days time the 8800 GTS 512mb is gona cost over £200, what a ******* joke, no wonder they changed its re-released date to April 1st, as the jokes on whoever buys one at that price when they can get the buggers now for only £158, its an old card thats been out since December 11th, so prices should go down now, not up like these **** taking ******** think. :D

isn't the 9800gx2 2 gts's for the price of 3 though? nvidia + making sense with prices haven't been in the same sentence for 3 or 4 years now.

Not really, cheapest 9800GX2 is around £325-350, if you take the average price of the 8800GTS 512MB and double it you will end up with a simalar figure, you also have remember the 9800GX2 is allot more complex then a single 8800GTS 512MB and your paying for the ability to have 8800GTS SLI on intel boards, unfortunately it's priced exactly where it should be.

i still think the price is too much for what the card is. The fact that the cores are downclocked makes it worse IMO.

makes a compelling reason to wait for the next gen
