in the process of a new build based around a q6600, got everything apart from the gpu. ( budget £ 200 ish) i am torn between the older 8800gtx or the newer 9800 gtx, now i know the 9800 has got bad press and a lot of you dont seem to like it, but seeing as i wont be using sli, and my monitor is a dell22 " (1680 x 1050 max) wouldnt it be better to go with the newer card , seeing as there is only about £20-30 difference here in uk. i wanna keep this set up as long as i can , so just need a bit of honest advice. p.s the only thing that sways me to the 8800 is the extra memory but would it make a difference thanks in advance

Id get the 8800 GTX as its got more memory, a bigger bus, and its cheaper. 
Theres simply no reason at all to buy a 9800 GTX when its slower, has less memory, a smaller bus, and is dearer.

Why pay an extra £30 for a slower card though, thats also got a smaller bus, and less memory, its a no brainer, 8800 GTX all the time, until the 9800 GTX becomes cheaper than it, or the 8800 GTX's finally run out so you can't get one.

It's a choice between the 8800GTS 512 (£140) or the 8800GTX (£175) in my opinion. Paying £195 for a cheap 9800GTX just isn't worth it, compared to an almost as fast GTS that you can then overclock to make up the 25MHz it's short (and more).

Pay the difference (£175) and buy a GTX
Did FSAA @ 1900x1200 with the X2 3870 not work out either?. I nearly bought one of the X2 3870's as a small upgrade so I'm pretty baffled as why you've went from the X2 to the 8800GTX
.Yeah, it's gotta be between the 8800 GTS 512MB and 8800 GTX. The 9800 GTX is, after all, an overclocked 8800 GTS 512MB with an extra SLi connector and bigger (albeit, from what I've heard, not that much better) cooler.
