Well posting this on behalf of a friend.

He wanted a graphics card thats going to last him a few years so he purhcased an Asus 9800GX2.

Sat in a box until his new PSU arrived, now fitted he's a bit worried about the temperature of the gpu(s). He's having to set his fan speed at 100% to keep the temps below 80deg when playing the likes of COD4

At that speed the fan on the card sounds like a jet flying over you head. He bought this from a local retailer and his wondering if theres anyway of returning it due to this. (he's had it a few weeks so can't return it under the distance selling act, belkieve it's seven days)

Is this a known issue that they run this hot?

Will he just get fobbed off by the supplier / Asus?

His case is quite efficient in dissipating hot air and is quite roomy so i don't think a bigger case will change much. Cable management isn't a problem.

The cooling system to me is very strange, it's as though the cooler on the card doesn't bring in any cold air only dissipates the hot air from the card.

Is there any way you can test it in another machine.then if the same just return it as faulty

Well i already told him cif it was me I would return anyway due to the heat.

If you bought a car and the ngine over heated then you would take it back wouldn't you?

He says he will ring the shop he got it from to see what he says.

I aggree but to sustain 80deg or lower the fan has to be set at 100% and at that speed you can hear the fan from his front room (pc upstairs) so i can't stress how loud it is.

gfx cards are always as loud as god anyway, thats why so many people watercool them even though it rarely helps much with overclocking.

The 9800GX2 particularly sounds like a bad one but then you should try a stock X1950xtx fan.. OMG!!!

If you're going to have 2 top end gpus facing each other with a tiny plastic and copper arrangement trying to keep it cool I'm not suprised it gets a bit warm.

The thing to do (IMO) is stick the fan on auto, if it overheats then send it back as its not fit for purpose.. however if it works fine and its just too loud I'm afraid thats tough.

Tell him to get watercooling :)

What case is it in? If he can get something like this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...the Kama-Bay System/Hard Drive Cooler - Black

in the front of his case with no blockages between it and the gfx card you may well notice a decent drop in temps.

Point is these stock coolers are just cack, it always baffles me how they are supposed to work, I swear they're a joke by mfrs that noonse has figured out yet.

what temps does it hit on automatic/bearable volume? i wouldnt worry too much as its obviously going to run hot. what is his airflow like?

Air flow is good, on auto he would go ober 100 deg easily.

He has THIS case.

Water cooling is an option but then he sepnt £400 on a new gfx card an a decent water cooling system is going to cost £150+.

Those temps are pretty normal, plus when your buying the 9800GX2 temperatures aren't the high point of it, neither is noise. That card was built to be the fastest and it is.
If your concerned about temperatures and noise wait for next gen cards to come in june.

should be cooler, but those temps aren't too high for a 9800GX2 really...

dont worry about the temps, just ignore then and leave the fans at the bearable maximum, if it fails, get it replaced as it failed during normal use.

Why would you expect them to be lower?
It has 2 8800GTS cores and pumps out 200w???

typo, meant aren't, fixed

having said that though, even overclocked, that 4x9800gx2 system never saw 100c even overclocked, although i guess they may have their fans on 100%, but i cant see them getting any airflow...

Maximum temp recorded whilst playing any game inc.Crysis on high settings on my system is 69c, idles around 48 -50c
Fan is silent at idle, using various Rivatuner fan profiles inc. 60% at 55c upward 75% at 65c upward, 100% over 68c. Case has 4 80mm silent fans inc one pulling air out directly opposite with the GX2 side vent to prevent hot air rising up the case.

Glad you posted that. the obvious thing to me is the idle temp, he is atleast 10deg higher than you, I monder how warm his room is.....

Thanks
