Sorry to make another which card thread but...

I currently have a 8800GTS 512, I only play COD4 at 1920 x 1200 and I want to boost performance. I need constant 100+ fps. It sits at 125 most of the time now but I have the textures set to low, bush's are a green blob until I get close lol.

9800GX2 is £235 from OcUK
4870 is £175 from OcUK

So I will save some money going for the 4870 but according to benchies the GX2 is much faster in COD4.

My power supply is a Corsair 520w, I assume this will just be good enough?

My mobo is P35 so getting one 4870 now and another later isnt really an option without a new mobo and psu.

So pro's and cons of the above cards.

Thanks

25fps according to Anandtech

@OP

Results *with* AA won't necc. be reflective of the results you'll get without, so that graph isn't really very useful for what you're looking for.

You'll probably need a better PSU than the Corsair 520. The 9800GX2 sucks down a LOT of juice - what is the rest of your system spec? It's also a very long card - make sure you case is big enough. And it's very hot and noisy too.

That said, I wouldn't buy anything else right now for around £200.

The GX2 might suffer from microstuttering but certainly beats the 4870 hands down at COD4 at 1920 x 1200 in all the reviews I have seen.

Looks like you might get away with max detail and 2xaa and still be around 125fps.

System spec in my sig, also 3 HDD's and XFi soundcard.

Ah yeah, sorry, missed that. Yeah, new PSU for a 9800GX2. My rig sucks around 500w at load, which obviously would be right on the cusp with your setup. If you want a 9800GX2, get something in the region of 750w, to allow the PSU to run more efficiently and give you headroom for future upgrades.

I really cant afford a new PSU too, this is my 2nd in 18 months already, I really should have gone for the 620w last time. I'd want modular too so it would be well over £100.

Should I go for a 4870 then? In the Anandtech review it shows the load power about the same between then 2 and its lower than 500w.

Yes, although i did mean compared to their 4850 results.
Addmitted i dont know what processor their using, a single 4850 nets me between 75-79 FPS on average, with ~ 110-120 in crossfire.

Something doesn't sound right there. Most sites are showing 100% scaling on COD4 with crossfire. You should be getting 150-160FPS

Check your rail amps. I can't see your psu been an issue. If it's an issue for the gX2,it will be for the 4870 as well since it's only 11w less.

The 4870 is only 50w more than your current rig and the 9800GX2 is only 61w more

I'm running a heavily overclocked Q6600, g92 gts (oc), a D5 water pump (24W), 4 hard drives, 2 optical drives, a soundcard, a wireless network card all off a 480w supply which isn't struggling.

You could buy either and if a problem return under the 7 day rule.

If you want to be on the safer side, go with the 4870.
