Hello I am new to the Overclockers Forum and need some help on what Power Supply to get for the 9800gx2. I know that you need a 8 pin and a 6 pin power connectior, I need a power supply that will work in conjunction with this system specification:

Motherboard: Asus Striker II Formula

Processor: Intel Q6600 or Intel Q9450

Ram: Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 Or Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 ( x2, so 4gb )

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 750 GB

Graphics Card : Xfx 9800Gx2

Case: Coolermaster Stacker 831

When I was browsing the Overclockers Forum I read a post that referred to this site of compatable 9800gx2 power supply http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9800gx2_pwr_supply.html after going through the list I was unable to find a Power supply under £100  . so I looked on the Overclockers site for a Power supply will ether of these work? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-148-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= or http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-064-TT . I know that the Coolmaster Power Supply Said it had a 6pin and a 8pin but is it too wide or will it be fine? need to be 100% sure about what to get as I dont want to make any silly mistakes as i've saved up for a wile now
and one last thing :) what Processors is best Q6600 or Q9450 and the Ram Corsair Dominator Or Crucial Ballistix Tracer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some reviews state it uses less power than a 3870X2 I think, and a 3870X2 runs off of a HX520W even.

Aye I'm running mine on a HX 520W. Nvidia are definitely blowing these power requirements out of proportion.

Edit: According to Guru3D...
8800 Ultra, Full Load: 365W total system power.
9800 GX2, Full Load: 374W total system power.

So yeah a HX 520W would be more than adequate, never mind a 620W or higher.

I just looked on [H] forum and some idiot was claiming it would not run on a HX620W and even 8800GTX SLi would not when it does and sucks way more power.

Hello Ulfhedjinn, I wouldn't personally say that Nvidia are blowing things out of proportion, yet. :p

I think the reason that Nvidia and ATI recommend a fairly high wattage power supply for their top end products is to basically cover their selves. For example, if someone that isn't particularly in the know with what is what in regards to hardware and wishes to purchase the Nvidia 9800GX2 because it is big and shiny, it is very likely that they will also buy a very sub-standard power supply to run their new card. If this is the case, a 500 wattage sub-standard power supply may have some problems running the Nvidia 9800GX2 as opposed to a 600 – 700 wattage power supply which should run the Nvidia 9800GX2 fine. All though, I certainly wouldn't want to run any kind of system of a cheap, non-branded power supply unit. :)

That is definitely not the case. :)

Sorry for snipping your post, it's just to save space. I did read all of it. :)

I am aware of how Nvidia and ATI over-state their power requirements to cover themselves in case of dodgy, underpowered PSU failure but this is taking it way too far. I have never, ever seen either company state a power supply twice as powerful as what is required. It's so absurd that in a brief brain-fart I considered that maybe Corsair handed Nvidia a wad of money to do so, it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

I remember when ATi said the x1950pro needed 30amps on the 12v rail, pmsl. :D

I've been out of the scene for a while.
I'm concerned if I get a 9800gx2 if my old PSU will be enough.
Spec in sig, the Tegem 580w has two 20amp lines with a blue light on the PSU to let you know > 1 line is being used in combine mode.
Only when my CPU is at 3.7 & 8800gtx is clocked at 648 does the combine light come on!
Do you think I could get away with a 9800gx2 using my current PSU ? thanks

If you can run a GTX/Ultra then you can more than likely run a GX2 with ease. :)

The GX2 uses less than 10W more than an Ultra.

Thanks for all your help I think I will get the Corsair HX 620W or the Corsair TX 750W as its only £5 more (What is the difference betwen HX and TX ??? )

Thanks
Gino
