9800gx2 Power

I have never, ever seen either company state a power supply twice as powerful as what is required. It's so absurd that in a brief brain-fart I considered that maybe Corsair handed Nvidia a wad of money to do so, it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

Hello Ulfhedjinn, on the product description of the Nvidia 9800 GX2 graphics cards, it states:

Finally 600W minimum for PSU and 700W+ is recommended

Now, I can completely see where you are coming since a 700 wattage power supply is getting a bit far-fetched. :)

(What is the difference betwen HX and TX ??? )

Hello Gino, the Corsair HX units are actually built by Seasonic as opposed to the TX units which are built by a company called Channel Well Technology (CWT). The Corsair HX power supply's are also modular, the TX units are not.

Here is a review of the Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU and a review for the Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU.

Though as Ulfhedjinn has already said, the Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU would be more than sufficient. :)

You dont need as much as 1000w, i have 750w psu with a GX2 and its still to much, with those specs you shouldnt need much more than 500w. It seems the trend to far over rate how much power they need. Using a power meter my enter system whiles running a GX2 when running a game with 4 hard drives etc is only about 360watts.

WelseyBurns Whats Your Opinion on the 9800gx2 ????

In terms of performance? Pure performance :)

The 7950GX2 was a let down, but Nvidia sure did get it right this time. Crysis is an absolute dream. The 8800GTX was great when it came out, but it has its limitations at high resolutions (1920x1200 etc). Im selling my "gaming" monitor 1440x900 that i dont need any more since i can play at the performance i expect on my 24" 1920x1200 40fps+ on basically maxed out settings :D.

The 9800GX2 doesnt seem to like AA right now, i think its due to drivers, but i never bothered with AA and never will until its "free". Im impressed with OCUK's price of there OCUK branded 9800 comming out at 352 quid inclusive. Guess no one can complain anymore :)

PS Im using the Thermaltake ToughPower 750W PSU, as long as your XFX comes with a 6 to 8 pin adapter then you dont have to worry.

I thought I would ask in this thread rather than starting a new one but regarding the 9800GX2 power requirements does the psu have to have a 6 pin and a 8 pin pci-e connectors. My psu ran a overclocked 8800GTX without a single problem so I know it should have the grunt to run a 9800GX2 but I don't know whether I can get away with the fact I only have 2 6 pin pci-e connectors?!

Buy the BFG one then, it has a 6 to 8 pin connector.

Sorry, for the slight hijack, but it relates to PSU requirements and graphic cards in particular. I'm ordering a HX520 for my E8400 & 8800GT set up. Now I know that's more than enough juice, but what about the next gen of cards, due later this year?

Don't worry, I know you don't have crystal balls (as such), but given the trend for die shrinks and what not, do you (in your opinion), think a 520 watt will cut the mustard with a high end single card from the true next gen cards (due later this year), or should I play it safe and get the HX620?

i would say go for the 620w, more futureproof, as far as power goes its better looking at it as opposed to looking for it:)

You need a 6 pin and 8 pin, mine has an adapter from 2 molex the 8pin. Some of them have an adapter from 6 pin to 8 pin.

I'm not entirely sure oweneades but I think you need the 8-pin for the GX2.

Thanks guys.

I have just got so confused over the reviews when it comes to actually plugging the damn card in. I don't want to have to buy a new psu when the one I have is more than up to the job.

Now I just have to convince the mrs that I need the card (how the hell am I meant to do that lol  ) :p
