9800gx2 problem

Hi

Brothers PC is playing up so I've been taking a look. It had put its resolution down to 800*600.
In device manager the 9800gx2 correctly lists twice but both entrys have an explanation mark and "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
I've uninstalled the drivers, rebooted and installed the new drivers and its still the same.

Next idea is to remove the card and reseat it. Just went to do that and the black case on the card (inclosing the heatsinks and PCBs) is literally too hot to touch....

Ideas?
Guessing it's fried itself?

9800gx2 was running at standard clocks as was q6600 and OCZ ram.

Fan profile might be jacked or the fan itself failed?

nVidia's performance tools bizzarely disable auto fan speed when you select customise as well which results in the fan locked at a slow speed.

it's normal for them to get a bit hot but if it's literally scorching hot then it's worth checking if there's a dust build up or if the fan is working at all. it might just need a good cleaning.

It was too hot for me to grip onto and remove (and had only been on 1hour surfing the web)..... and that's coming from someone who did A-Level chemistry and spent every lesson burning himself deliberately with splints!

I've reseated the card, and blown any dust out of the fan. Also I've checked and the fan is spinning (don't know what speed though).

Fortunately I've remembered that I have got some other Nvidas elsewhere in the house; a BFG 7800GTX (crys at how much I spent on that!) and a 7900GS so I'll try them in it and see if its still giving errors.

I don't really want to take the cover off the card to investigate further as IIRC it voids the warranty.

I've just checked and it's got 2 years warranty from April '08 so should still be covered...... If it is the card am I contacting OcUK who sold the product (and sold it as there own "OcUK 9800GX2 1GB") or TwinTech who made it?

Would believe it would be 1 year return to base so would need to contact TwinTech, certainly won't harm contacting OCUK "just" in case its got a special warranty being rebadged as their own.

Update:

Turned it on today and it's still at its proper resolution but in device manager the 9800gx2 (correctly lists twice) both entrys have an explanation mark and "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" And it's turned off Aero effects.

Fan is spinning.

I can't find how to get the temperature reading off it  The only nvidia entry in control panel is Physx

It's been on about 15mins (just web surfing) and using an IR heat probe the black casing of it is between 50C and 60C (varies across the card).

Now just waiting for it to bluescreen & reboot & drop the res to 800*600 as normal. Then I'll stick my 7800GTX in to prove its the card at fault.

Thanks, I'll have a look at them.

It ran for an hour earlier, with the device manager errors but at the correct resolution (no aero though).

Just had it off for half an hour, turned it on and all the problems seem to be gone....

It's at its proper resolution, aero effects on, and in device manger "the device is working properly" and this time it lists the correct resources.
Also the Nvidia entry in control panel has reappeared.

Temps:
(Remember theres two PCB's inside the card so two entries in Device Manager and two 'cards' in GPU-Z's drop down)
GPU: 77.0
GPU: 73.3
PCB: 69.0

GPU: 91.0
GPU: 90.0
GPU: 81.3

So one's running hotter than the other......

if those temps are idle then it's pretty shocking. taking it apart and give it a good clean then reapply thermal paste should sort the problem out, assuming of course nothing's burnt out. If you're not confident enough to do it then see if turning the fan speed up sorts out the problem, failing that then it's rma time.

Yea, I am confident enough to open it up but that's gonna void the warranty isn't it?

FYI the fans running at 2000rpm (not sure what they should be or if they're temperature dependent).

Maybe one of the cores has died?

Check the fan first and then run furmark with HWMonitor to check the temps, if both cores are active then HWMonitor will show the temp rise for each core :)

Hey West

I’ve got the same problem about opening my card to give it a clean.. Does it void the warranty? if so then bloody hell! I mean how do u blow out matted dust when the whole thing is enclosed in this shroud with tiny slits for vents? Dust is going in ok but it aint going out ok..

The card has 2 warranty void if removed stickers.. Now is that the stickers or the shroud?

This could be the thing that stops the RMA.. But if u cant open it once in a blue moon to clean it to save its life span.. What the hell are u meant to do.. Canned air doesn’t do a whole proper job when u cant force the matted dust through the slit vents!

Oh what i forgot to ad was that only the Green LED next to the DVI port lights up now but not the Blue LED next to the HDMI port, unsure what this means but when it worked that was lit and i did use the hdmi do connect to my lcd.

It's not hard to remove if you know you're way around, but removing the shroud for the first time can be a daunting task.

If the warranty sticker isn't over one of the screws or on the shroud where the 2 pieces come apart, then it's perfectly possible to remove it without leaving any sign if you do it carefully.

I have mine removed as soon as it's tested working, keeps it cool and easy to clean.

No it dosent cover any screws which is good.

How it would effect the card in a bad way is past me because its just like a normal gfx card under the shroud, i think the shroud was just to make it look a bit more different as if you look at the GTX295 it has a nice gap for the fan vent which tbh is what the 9800GX2 should have had.
