9800gx2 slowdown within 20 mins of gameplay

ok so my pc keeps slowing down after i start playing a game.
my rig is dust free up to date
it was running games fine untill a week ago
my specs are
phenom x4 9950 be
leadtek 9800 gx2
4 gb of ocz ram
running vista 64bit

any help would be much appreciated
