I had my 9800GX2 fail while under warranty and the supplier want to give me a GTX260 as a replacement, no idea yet as to what brand although it will probably be an MSI as this is what the 9800GX2 was.

Is it any better really as i have the option of a partial refund which they told me would be £125.00

Thanks.

GX2's weren't really a reliable card, i'd get the GTX 260.

Edit: Just get the refund and buy a 5770.

Tell them that that is unreasonable, and that they should give you a card that reliably matches the performance of the 9800 GX2. The minimum you should accept is a GTX 280 or above, and tell them that you're being generous because your favourite game is Call of Duty 4, in which, according to your most trusted review site, the 9800 GX2 significantly outperforms the named card.

Honestly I think they're taking the mickey a bit, even if the GTX 260 will be better in certain scenarios.

You should expect a like for like replacement (ie top end card of the time should mean you get a top end replacement now) or a full refund of the original cost. It's not your fault it failed.

How are they calculating the partial refund? The most common method I have encountered is original purchase price multiplied by percentage warranty period remaining.

So a card that cost £375 new and had been used for 2 years of a 3 year warranty would now be worth £125.

A 9800GX2 would be very similar in performance in games to a GTX260 in most cases. In Folding@Home the 9800GX2 would utterly destroy the GTX260 so if that's your bag, take the cash.

I think I would be tempted to take the money anyway as you wouldn't be able to sell a 9800GX2 for £125 so it doesn't sound like such a bad deal.

Yeah, either take the cash or ask for a better card.

I've had both and they're very similar in performance - in raw performance i found the GX2 better whereas the 260 was better in more memory intensive games.

I preferred the 260's more reliable min and avg frame rates TBH but i'd aim for a 280 or 285 as a replacement. 275 as a minimum.

Thanx for all your opinions everyone, i might opt for the money and get a 3D vision setup from them and may be able to work up a deal.
I forgot to mention in my original post that i got a GTX295 when the 9800GX2 died as i was considering an upgrade anyway.
