9800GX2 won't work with GFX drivers installed

I'll give a hopefully brief bit of background first. I had a 9800GX2 die on me, and I had a GTX260 lent to me for a while, and so I updated the drivers for the computer with this graphics card, I believe it was "197.45_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_international_whql" for my Windows Vista 32bit system.
Now that I've returned the GTX260 and bought a new (Warranty replaced) 9800GX2 (from PNY rather than original EVGA) I've got some problems.

First time I plugged it in, everything seemed to work fine. However after I rebooted, I was met with a black screen as soon as the windows loading bar animation had finished, and it would simply sit there doing nothing.
So I restarted again, went into safe mode this time figuring perhaps the drivers for the GTX260 were not good for 9800GX2 and uninstalled the display driver via the programs list in the control panel. Initially this hadn't stated that it had uninstalled or required a restart, the nvidia uninstaller simply closed and I thought nothing of it. So I restarted the computer anyway, and it booted straight into normal windows fine, with no graphics driver currently installed.
I then went to install the latest drivers from nvidia's website, suitable for the 9 series, Windows Vista 32-bit (257.21_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_international_whql). This all went through fine it seemed, and I rebooted, thinking that'd be that. Unfortunately I was met again with a black screen and no windows.

After restarting, uninstalling the drivers again and going through the same process (this time noticeably with affirmation that the display drivers had been uninstalled and that I should restart my computer to confirm the process) I was still met with a black screen when booting up to normal windows with the drivers installed. So I attempted instead to load the previous drivers, no change.

In the numerous times I've attempted this, I have at times got different errors pop up. One involved NAM which was unable to uninstall/be removed. The other was a more specific error after installing drivers: Error in C:\Windows\system32\NVCPL.DLL. Missing entry:ExportOEMDefaults. Now this error seems to have popped up after windows has tried to automatically install drivers, as seems to be the case each time I restart windows without any already installed. I've let this process continue without trying to install drivers myself, but unfortunately I still get a black screen on windows start up.

Frankly I'm at a loss. I've no idea how to proceed to fix this, and as I've been without this computer for over a month already, it's very frustrating to get this far, only to tackle another unfathomable hurdle.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
