I'm thinking about upgrading my GFX card, I mainly play SupCom and its a bit slow tbf on my existing 7950GX2..

I have 4Gb of Pc8500 and an Core 2 duo extreme clocked at 3.66Ghz, would the 9800GX2 be worth it, or would I really need to move to a quad core to see any benefit in SupCom?

Usually with SupCom it's the processor that is the biggest factor in deciding the fps, it loves quad core and brings most dual core systems to their knees on the massive levels.
9800GX2 is a powerful beast but it's a 'money no object' item atm, not worth it for what you get, considering for the amount of cash you spend on it you can buy two cheaper cards, stick em in SLI and get better performance than it (2x8800GTX for example), with a bit of money to spare

What res is the key?

I run at 1920x1200 on a pro gfx monitor, it does look nice but its killing my FPS unless I turn everything down, then it looks bleak...

hmm. I was thinking of the SLI 8800GTX combos,
I'll probably whack the core2duo ex, on MM along with the gfx and upgrade to a quad core and 8800GTX SLIs...

Hey V-Spec,

I would have gone 2x GTX's if i'd had an SLi mobo but as i wanted to keep my X38 DS5 i decided the BFG GX2 on special was a nice enough price to go for.

Presently sat on my desk ready for install this evening.

Also, gone from an X2 to this and game @ 1920x1200 so will post findings.

gt

Incidentally, i've had a 7950GX2, 8800GTX, 3850 (256 and 512mb), xfired 2900XT's and an 8800GTS (G92) so will be able to compare them a little too.

So if a 9800GX2 is basically 2 x 8800GTS 512Mb (G92) cards strapped together, is 2 x 8800GTX 768Mb cards theroetically a better buy?

It would be cool to see the results of the comparison, but I think i'll go with the 8800GTXs in SLI as its gunna be a hell of a lot quicker than my 7950GX2, and whack a Quad core in for good measure

Although supcom does take advantage of quad core, it's the gfx card holding V-spec back in my opinion.

At 1600 x 1200 res you can expect a 13% gain going quad core but an almighty 105% gain just going to a 8800 GTX

If you went SLI GTX or 9800 GX2 the gain would be much larger.

Here's a link comparing gains from processor, gfx, memory.

It's a bit old but easy enough to extrapilate by finding reviews of the new 9800 GTX and GX2 cards and seeing how much faster they are (or not) to an older GTX card.

Here for example:

http://www.techspot.com/review/91-asus-geforce-9800-gx2/page7.html

So on the above basis, unless money is no object I would buy one GTX for starters with a view to getting a second one if your board is SLI. If not, just get the 9800GX2.

Looks like I'm leaning towards the 2 x 8800GTX over the GX2. At least with that option I can buy 1 now, and the other on next pay day! Thx for the advice guys

hmm.. thx :)

I always wondered whether it was the GFX which was hammering my FPS, I think the reason is that if I'm messing around with an ub3r base, when I zoom right in on the units and buildings it drops to like 7-10fps, yet when I zoom right out it always shoots up to 30+fps because theres no graphical detail - just 2d icons.. I might be tempted to get a pair of Gfx cards first then go to a quad core afterwards.... hmm... decisons decisions.

Definitely go gfx first and upgrade dual core later if necessary.

In fact, unless the money is burning a hole, I'd get one GTX for now. That will be over a 100% framerate gain for starters. Pick up a second GTX cheaply later on.
