Hello,

My friend has a 9800x3d and ordered a 5080 to replace his 9900k / 3090.

i understand there's x870 and b850 motherboards- he doesnt want to overclock so assume b850 and wants WIFI. Assume PCIE 5.0 is standard now ? - i'm out of the loop a little so any reccomendations welcome gents & ladies.

any suggestions on these welcome too:

Ram 32GB - he says 64 but i think its excessive? he only games.
2 x M.2 SSD - not sure about PCIE lanes - again out of the loop here.
PSU - undecided he has a 1000w psu , i suggested keeping this and selling off his old hardware. he said he will likely o/c his 5080.

He is spending ~£500 on CPU and ~£1000 on GPU, so an extra £100 on the RAM isn't a big deal. Also difficult to upgrade to 4 sticks on DDR5, so not a bad idea anyway.

Generally not an issue, however X870/X870E boards often steal CPU lanes for the USB4 ports, so buyer beware.

If you want to be super thorough, knock yourself out:

Makes sense, though it likely won't have the required connector so will need to use an adapter.

Both support OC.

X870: USB4 required and PCI-E 5.0 graphics.
B850: PCI-E 5.0 graphics is optional, 1x PCI-E 5.0 M.2 slot required.
B840: PCI-E 4.0 graphics.

B650E: PCI-E 5.0 graphics.

No, see above.

Was looking at the Apex yesterday, reminded me of an old Apex I owned but price is pretty high now…

Is a b650 no good with a 9800 x3d the description in the store is they are for the 7000 series?
B650 is fine, but depending on the age of the stock, it might need a BIOS update for 9000 CPUs. This is not a problem, since B650 boards have flashback for unsupported CPU.
