So it's that time again.... and while I'm pretty comfortable with components, I'm not too proud to admit I don't know everything and would appreciate suggestions for changing out parts for better and/or better value.

This is what I have so far (The 9900x is just a placeholder for the 9800x3d)
I'll be re-using my m.2s and my case (p400a) and for the time being my RTX3080 until the 5000s drop early next year

My main queries would be around the PSU -- I'm looking at getting the 5090 which is *rumoured* to maybe need 2x16pin connectors! so it's gotta be able to handle that. And the mobo.. I know a lot of you like the ASUS TUF but I need an optical audio out which the TUF doesn't have so I went for the ROG... but I'm open to other suggestions and if anyone can sell me on x870 over the x670?

the 5090 is *rumoured* to maybe need 2x16pin connectors!
If so, this is going to totally suck for a lot of us, and will probably mean getting a 5080 instead, they probably planned it to be like this long ago to grab two types of markets
Maybe I will just have to skip 8k and save the mony that would have nabbed me a 5090, an 8k screen, and what is starting to look like a new psu too
but that will mean my son won't be getting his grubby mitts on my 4k monitor when the time came,, or just get a oled 4k screen to scratch the itch when they eventually come out!
I wonder what connector the 5080 super will use
damn it

Some options to save some pennies:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £990.90 (includes delivery: £7.99)

I don't know of any PSUs that have 2 of those. If they can deliver 600 watts each, wouldn't the PSU have to be like 1500 watts or more?

The PSU in your spec does have two connectors, but I believe it is limited to 800 watts combined.

It's only rumour though -- who really knows? Some of the rumours make sense... this one.... I could see it, but I'm not sure it's necessary. I've heard, again *rumours*, of a 600w power envelope for the 5090.. the 16pin can do 600w (supposedly) and I think the card can pull 150w from the slot? So a single 16pin and slot can push 750w -- seems like should be enough headroom for a 600w envelope but I'm not in nVidia R&D :p

That PSU looks like a good pick -- I'll definitely stick it on my short list.
I'm fairly set on sticking to AIO for the cooler - allows me more freedom in design to keep the heat out of the centre of the case and push it straight out, I'm fine paying the premium for that one.
Can you explain your motherboard pick for me? At a quick glance it doesn't seem like I'm really losing anything and it's cheaper -- so looks like an obviously good pick, which makes me think I'm missing something :D Pay less, get more sounds wrong in my head :P

X870 is just B650E with USB4 and an updated BIOS. X670E is a superior chipset and has more lanes available (e.g. most X670E boards have 4x M.2 slots, whereas X870 and B650E boards usually have 3).

One thing to note is that it only has a 8 year warranty, whereas e.g. Antec's HCG Pro has a 10 year warranty and the Seasonic Vertex it is based on has a 12 year warranty.

We also don't have any reviews yet of the Phanteks, but it is believed to be built by Helly, which is an OEM Seasonic use for their lower-end models.

Should you not be looking at an ATX3.1 PSU. I mean now is the perfect time (i.e new build). And memory I'd stick with 32GB as it is easy enough to swap out should you find that a) it isn't enough or b) prices for 64GB drop in the future.

So, sounds like I'm not really losing anything by losing those lanes given I only intend to use 2 of the m2 slots and the 16x lanes for the gpu. Right?

Seems like the only real change 3.1 brings is a minor change to the 12vhpwr, no? It's worth considering but it depends how much extra it'd cost (the few 3.1's I can find seem notably pricier than similar 3.0 ones though..)

As for ram; I'm on 32gb and it's already bordering not-enough - I frequently see mid to high 20s in use

Yup!

FYI: A lot (maybe most) older PSUs already come with the updated 12v2x6 cable.

Below NZXT C1500W atx 3.1 dual 12x4 pin is meant to be very good, and best you vcan get price/performance (hardware busters said it meets Titanium specs).

one look elsewhere and found it on preorder for £229.99 (respectible pc seller), expected delivery at warehouse 5th Nov...so Monday...£70 cheaper than OCuk.

think that'll tick your boxes.

I'm with @tetrus for the X870 Pro Rs wifi.. going up a notch for me that makes any diff i can see is the aorus elite as it has 4 m.2 slots and a led debug display on mobo for troubleshooting and a couple more 3.2 usb ports, but that's £269, and really don't think worth the extra unless you really loking for that...actually one instance that going white build wins...asrock not doing a black mobo equivalent..you'll have to look at the riptide wifi which is £259.99 for an equivalent(which is basically the steel legend as far as i can tell)

That's not a bad pick; 1500w is ... somewhat overkill... but I like that it has twin 12vhwpr slots for 'future proofing' (yeah I hate that word too) and given how infrequently I need to change PSU it might be worth the bit extra cost.... I'll consider it at the very least, ta.

just remember if you go for it, buy it elsewhere for £230... might be overkill, but then's so a 5090  and I have a feeling that'll set you back £2k+
