Hi,
Looking to do a new build and upgrade from my 3900X to a 9800X3D. I've already bought some of the components and others still deciding.

Looking for a sense check of the build I was going to finish putting together and any feedback:
* Fractal North XL TG - Bought
* 9800X3D - Bought
* Noctua NH-D15 Chromax black - Bought
* Corsair RM850X (2024) 850W - To buy
* Noctua NF-A12x25 case fans - To buy
* 3080 Ti - Will be moving over from current build

The two components I am still going back and forth on, the mobo and the ram. For the ram, from looking at reviews/guides/forums etc.. it seems that DDR5-6000 CL30 is the best memory to get. I am looking at 2x32GB (apparently using 2 sticks is better than going 4, say 2x16 now and a further 2x16 later for instance).

The memory on the short list is:
* Corsair vengeance (CMK64GX5M2B6000Z30)
* G.Skill Trident ZZ5 NEO/RGB (I am not fussed about RGB at all and usually that adds clearance isssues?).

For motherboards, probably the most difficult part to pick, the short list is this:
* Asrock X670E PG Lightning
* Gigabyte X670 Gaming X670
* ASrock X670E Pro Rs
* Asrock X670E Steel Legend - Maybe less keen on the styling of this board
* MSI MPG X670E Carbon WIFI - Probably my first pick
* Asus Rog Strix X670E-A/F - Probably my 2nd pick.

Any thoughts on the above build?

I have just built a 9800X3D system and I went for the following for the motherboard and ram

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £317.96 (includes delivery: £7.99)

My reason for this is that the ram is on the motherboards supported list and had no issues at all with it not booting due to ram issues. Enabled EXPO and the system has been working ever since.

I would maybe look at what features you want from the motherboard and once decided look at the RAM supported list and go from there

Do you have a budget for the motherboard\ram?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I hadn't even considered looking at the motherboard supported list.

A very quick and dirty search and some Kingston memory seems be the way to go, it's on the QVL.

This for example:
* Kingston Fury Beast White 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 KF560C30BWK2-64

or

* Corsair dominator.

No budget per se.

Having a look at each of the motherboards listed the ram is not on all the QVL lists

Asrock X670E PG Lightning - Yes
Gigabyte X670 Gaming X670 - No
ASrock X670E Pro Rs - Yes
Asrock X670E Steel Legend - Yes
MSI MPG X670E Carbon WIFI - No
Asus Rog Strix X670E-A/F - No

This does not mean it will not work.

What features do you want from a motherboard?

I've just seen your username is ED209 :D

In terms of features, nothing too crazy. Having 2x M2 gen5 slots would be nice. Gives me chance to add a second later.

Bunch of usb ports, although I realise 4.0 is an x870 standard and not too fussed about that so that's fine.

Also don't want it to look too garish. Really not keen on the look of quite a few boards. I don't want not need a lot of RGB!

I don't use WiFi, I have a cable to my PC but it seems most mobo's have WiFi now anyway, the spec of the WiFi is not important to me.

You want expo memory for AM5 and qvl list are not often updated as they don't test every kit on the market but most memory work regardless.

32gb is fine for gaming only if you play heavly modded games you mite need more, 2 dimms arebetter than 4 dimms to run otherwise you may have to run them at slower speeds
