980ti advice

Hey,

Currently running a 7900 series and looking to upgrade for VR. I'm not really too up on the card scene anymore and just had a few questions I was hoping someone could answer!

1) Is there going to be leaps and bounds between a 980Ti and the 1080 when its released?

2) Will the 1080 release significantly lower the price of the 980Ti?

3) Is there a large difference between the many different vendor models that OC offers? noticed a few small clock speed differences, not sure how much difference that makes.

Thanks

Unfortunately no one knows the answer to questions 1 and 2. I certainly wouldn't be buying a 980ti right now though..

Its worth hanging on a few more months if you can, as 980TI price will probably start to fall when the new cards are out anyway so you might be able to pickup a bargain or the 10xx range might be really good (or AMDs offering).

Regarding vendors aside from small clock differences and different coolers (that will probably all be pretty close together) there isn't much difference apart from warranty. EVGA gets a good rep around here.

If you want a new card, I would also suggest against getting a 980Ti since the resell value of it will plummet (how much will it drop is debatable but inevitable) when the new card is out.

However, if you could find a decent pre-owned EVGA, then go for it, they're starting to drop in price anyway :)

Not only will the resell value will plummet, but the performance as well with Nvidia "too busy" with the launch of the new cards and "forgot" about optimising older cards for new games. The 780Ti was suppose to be quite a bit faster than the 970 hardware wise, but look what happened to it now...even in the Steam VR benchmark it is quite a bit lower score than cards the likes of 290/290x :p

Cheers for the input, VR headset is due to arrive in June, so a little against the idea of not having a card around that time! Based on past experiences do you think the 10xx series will launch on time around then or is there likely to be delays?

I've seen a 980Ti go second hand for £359, another for £400. I think if I had spotted it in time I would have snapped them up, it seems crazy cheap...

But then again, Pascal might give us a 1070/80 that trades blows with the 980 Ti's performance...

We are all but certain to learn when new cards will be available at Computex, which is 31st May - 4th June. It's even possible some news will leak before then. I would HIGHLY suggest you wait until then at least, because this will tell you when the new cards will be released, what specs they offer and also the price (most likely). Your decision will be made vastly easier if you can wait until then before making a decision.

I don't think I'd pay the inflated prices at the mo, but if you can bag a bargain or a good price on a used one, I see no reason not to get a 980ti now. The new cards released this year will be thoroughly underwhelming I think. There, I've said it

Everyone said the same last year as well and then we got a card that performed pretty much on a par with a 780Ti (priced at £500 at the time) for £270...and that was on the same process as well..

The 970 wasn't on par if my memory isn't failing me. The 980 was closer in performance. Either way, there wasn't a lot to separate the cards. Hence "underwhelming" like he said.

If the new fastest card is 15pc faster than a 980ti stock for stock, it will be distinctly underwhelming though will no doubt sell in bucket loads to existing owners of the 980ti because it'll have 1.5gb more vram or y'know new process and all that malarkey.

You say that as if everyone owns a 980 Ti though :p

Some will have lesser cards and want 980Ti performance for a much lower price which is looking very likely by June from current rumours.

Hence why the OP should not buy a 980Ti now, unless he doesn't care about the money and is happy in the knowledge that he might be able to get the same thing significantly cheaper in a 1-2 months time.

I shall do my best to hold fire, just hope the vr doesn't arrive before the announcements early june!

Thanks for the input.

This is a good point, but the 980 ("flagship") wasn't any cheaper than the 780ti previous flagship. So if the new fastest card is 15pc faster than a 980ti you can guarantee it won't be any cheaper than a 980ti. The 780ti did drop in price but it wasn't immediate catastrophic drops, though the larger drops did come after a time.

Of course there might be a secondary model that's just a bit slower and priced closer to £300 quid, which is what we have to hope for. Even though I have a 980ti myself :p

^ Exactly. I think it will be just like last time. 1080 (if it is called that on release) will be roughly similar to 980Ti, for a very similar price. 1070 will be between 980 and 980Ti, more towards 980, with current 980 pricing. As I said, all fairly underwhelming really, especially if you already own 980Ti(s), and I'll be thoroughly amazed if they are any cheaper. Call me next year when the big boys arrive.

Um, the 980 launch price was cheaper than the 780Ti launch price

780Ti was $699 officially and the 980 was $549 officially. After VAT and conversion that is still £100+ more.

Was it? I paid £499 each for a pair of 780Tis not that long after launch. I seem to recall 980's costing more than this.
