980Ti - which one?

Hi all,

I'm looking to include a 980Ti in my new build but don't really know which one to go for.

How much difference is there between one costing £489.95 (on offer) and a more expensive one at £600+?

Yes I can see a small percentage difference in clock speeds and some cooling differences but that's all. I almost certainly will NOT overclock, is that where the difference comes in?

It depends specifically what model you are comparing. There's some at £600+ for no reason other than brand name, but some are £600 for a good reason, such as cooling, clock speeds, etc. If you don't plan on overclocking you will want to take the clock speeds into consideration, however I would advise you on performing a simple overclock (e.g: overclocking to a speed your card has a 99% chance of doing), because you do gain some performance for the click of a few buttons - It also frees up your choice of card if you particularly like the aesthetics of one with a low clock speed.

All of the prices I'd consider high this week, I'd wait 2-3 hours for the "This Week Only" deals to update and hope the majority of 980Tis are added to it again.

I'd probably suggest the MSI Gaming 6G if it was back down to its price last week, £535 - The Inno3D Hybrid (the one at £570) is also a solid choice if you have room for the radiator. It'll run a lot cooler than any air cooled model.

Nothing other than different coolers.

Paying more for a non refrence card for example gives you no more guarantee of an overclock. As your not overclocking anyway id buy whatever obe is currently the cheapest and you like the look of.

Pick the brand who's RMA process you like the most, factor that in. Nothing worse than being hung out to dry when you're expensive piece of HW goes on the fritz.

Yes that one was on my provisional list last week, only because it's a brand I have had before with graphics cards.
Didn't realise the 'this week' offers start on Wednesday - thanks.

+1 This is more important than anything else as some of these cards run hot on air.

@OP buy the best model you can afford as well but look at several reviews.

These cards are reliable as long as you have good case ventilation & a sensible gap between the components (like any component there are always random failures). I would not put one in a mini ITX or SFF case they run way too hot unless you buy the stock HSF model which exhausts the hot air out the back.

After 28 days if it fails or needs returning its between 1-6 weeks how long it takes to get it repaired/replaced depends on the manufacturer.

OCUK is the best place to buy but they are limited on warranty by the manufacturer policy & some are better than others in this regard.

Should also consider how much it will cost to ship the card back for RMA.
Thats approx £27 with Royal Mail if you are fully insured for the £500 or whatever the cost is.

Plus whatever costs on top you have to box & package securely as its still your responsibility to ensure it arrives for the RMA in good condition.

Recently cost me £37 for P&P plus packaging costs to return a GTX 980 Ti.

I've just posted my full build list in general hardware for comments.

Decided on the EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti Superclocked ACX 2.0+ 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card in the end. This was based on EVGA RMA being good and Joe's recommendation on ACX.

Could I do better? Not placing the order until later today or sometime tomorrow. Would like it for something to do at the weekend though.

The Superclocked+ one comes with a backplate but you can pick those up for around £20 if you fancy adding it yourself - Not worth the £60 price gap on OcUK in my opinion. The card is great for the money and you get EVGA warranty which is well regarded as being one of the best when it comes to GPUs :p

44 of the 226 cards on the 980Ti owners thread are EVGA cards, which is a fairly substantial margin considering the '44' doesn't include reference ones, hopefully that gives you a bit of confidence too.

i'm building a 980ti system in the next few months and have decided to go with evga because of their reviews, RMA process. more expensive but it's peace of mind when spending a lot of £££

Why on earth use RM???? There are so many more cheaper and more reliable options.
