The iPhone 3G 8gb in America is $99 which works out as £60.56 but if you buy it from the U.K. it costs a whopping £342.50 for the same model, what is all this about? Also i'm thinking about getting the 3GS but i guess the 32gb model will be like £500 and also next year maybe 4G?

I believe the iPhone for 99$ in the US is 99$ with a contract. We get it for free on contract.

Correct me if I'm wrong peoples :p

It's simplified americanism - a misrepresentation by Apple - $99 iPhone 3G is subject to 24 month contract, not pay as you go setup.

i was tallying as a new customer, and came up with the below - may be of use for people (maybe not). Either based on PAYG with simplicity (for same period (18month or 24) or a £35 contract.
