So currently running my faithful 9900k with a 4080 series card @3440x1440 at 120hz

That alongside a WD black m.2 and 32gb of corsair ram ( unknown speed )

This is purely a gaming pc btw.

Thoughts on if its worth a cpu, motherboard and memory upgrade at this stage?

Are you happy enough with the performance you are getting.?
Putting aside what you could get, it is more important that the types of games you play are not feeling compromised due to your CPU.

There, I feel better writing that.....

Now, absolutely mate.
You need at least a 265k, Z890 board and CU type memory or a 9800x3d, X870 and 32GB DDR5 6000 CAS 30, otherwise you are totally missing out and very much not utilising your 4080.

Hope that clears things up for you :D

Seriously though, just consider how your games are performing that you play and are you happy enough..? Otherwise CPU, board and memory can be pretty expensive.

Great CPU btw, I still have one on a Gigabyte Z390 Master, not in a system now though.

And here I am wanting a 9900K as an upgrade :P Got some Z170 BIOS modding to do and after a cheap 9900K to try it with, but for some reason this CPU is holding an insane resale price.

OP, if you do decide to upgrade, chances are you could recoup some good coin given the 9900K weirdly still commands about £200 from the usual second-hand retailers and auction houses.

I should get on with swelling my 9900k at some point. Then again I still have the Z390 master as well......

So, I'll see.

Didn't think about the value on these..! Then again they are still a capable 8 core CPU

Have the same CPU/z390 master/4080 here & had it in my head I'd replace it when the 15th gen came out. But as that was a busted flush I decided to wait for the 9950X3D

But having recently priced this all up I'm sitting here thinking if it's really worth it. Although it would be nice to upgrade to a modern platform (DDR5/PCI-E 5 blah blah) My 9900/4080 combo runs what I want at 4k perfectly fine as it is. If anything, I tend to play older games more than modern ones...

It's all a bit weird tho, this is the longest I've kept a computer (2018!) - Wouldn't have imagined keeping one for going on 7 years before.

A few 1440p benchmarks from a forum members thread moving to a 9800x3d from 9900k.

Interesting how well the 9900k still holds up.

True

There also so me massive gains so its wise to check on which games you play, BF3 ultra to medium was a big difference in FPS thought it mite be GPU vram but was tested with a 7900xtx.

Indeed, but I would have expected such gains with what some consider to be an excellent gaming focussed CPU, the 9800x3D. Comparing it to a 9900k, mine was bought in 2018 iirc, I am pleased with how the Intel CPU holds up well. Dependant on what you play and also factoring 1% lows etc.
Not everyone still using such a CPU today, considering that is 9th gen Intel, can't be too focussed on the top end kit and what that can offer, and cost..!

My son still games with a 3770k and a 1080 GTX. He has hundreds of hours of playing Helldivers..!

Refreshing to see.

No chance. I'm one of those who has the Nvidia overlay running in all my games. CPU is never one of my bottlenecks (using a 4070 Super @1440p and mostly single-player titles.) My 9900k still has a few good years left in her yet.

Ps. It's mildly overclocked to ~5.2GHz.

finally have put mu 9900k to rest, its now a server running in another room, 9950x3dd be here tomorrow :) think its time for a jump in tech, 9900k is still a beast in anygame with my 4090 tho!

You stumped me there, so I had to go and look it up:

DD, or “double D,” is one size above a D, giving a fuller, more pronounced look. While the difference between D and DD may seem slight, it's visually and volumetrically more significant than many assume.

:D

I did this with my I7 9700K.

Upgraded to a 9800X3D just before Christmas and now the I7 9700K is a plex server
