Just a quick question, would an 8350 slot straight into a 990fx rev 2.0 motherboard without a bios update? My mate is a little freaked out at the prospect of updating his bios due to previous bad experiences.

Cheers

Supporting new CPU's was released in October 2012 according to their site. That processor has been ok with BIOS 1604 upwards.

So sorry for the noob questions, how can he see what version of his bios he is running? I assume there is something on the boot up screen, or is there somewhere in windows where he can look?

Thanks

it tells you straight away in the POST (black screen at the top usually). You may have to disable the gay splash screen to see this.

See if it recognises the processor when he boots up. It will list is again in the POST. The date after the version indicates it's newer than the website information.

The best way to tell is to download, install and run CPU-Z and look at mainboard tab. If rev 1.xx then 1604 is required. Otherwise rev 2.xx 1503 is OK.

Updating bios via windows is reliable now with later ASUS boards. I have done it a couple of times whereas in earlier days I would have thought twice, crossed myself and used only DOS.

I used the Asus BIOS EZ Flash tool yesterday, worked a treat, no dramas. Very quick and easy.

I was having a look through a PDF of his manual and there was a mention of an Asus update utility where it updates the bios over the internet in a windows environment. It looked quite straight forward on paper, anyone got any experience of it?

Cheers

version 1503, 11-01-2013 is for the rev 2.0
No need for a BIOS update to support PD on that.

Tell him not to be such a sissy :)

Also the rev 1.0 printed somewhere on the board IS A RED HERRING.
Unless of course some clever person force flashed a rev 2.0 BIOS on it.

see picture
rev 1.00 printed in small text under the R2.0 on the white label is normal.

R1 also has green heatsinks which look much nicer than the ugly brown ones on the R2 :)

Just a word of advice - NEVER update a bios in Windows, I used same utility to do mine two years ago and it failed and guess what? Dead motherboard until I found out some dude on the internet who reprogrammed BIOS's via SPI header but cost me for the privilege..
