Hey. as per the title, how on earth do I go about this? So far I've been unable to get the drivers to play nicely under windows or linux.

Any thoughts? An 8800gt on my desk feels wrong

The problem is a little hard to specifiy. Under windows, folding informs me that the secondary card is not supported at this time, and suggests I run the cpu client instead. If the primary card is removed and monitor moved over, it then behaves fine.
Under linux, I get 'unstable machine' along with '.. this is a sign of a more serious error, shutting down'

That is a somewhat incoherent thread. If anything, it suggests that I should have gone with the 4870 rather than the 280gtx. A useful reference though, thank you.

Right now I'm trying to cool down my 280 by underclocking it, with bugger all success. Will give putting both cards in one machine another go in the near future though

On windows, you need to extend the desktop to a 'second' screen - if you dont, the second client will report that it is not supported and will not work. Perhaps give this a go? There is a shader bug with some nvidia cards where cards with different numbers of shaders do not work well together, resulting in one getting fewer points, so dont be surprised if your output from both is a little low. Im pretty sure there are some ways to 'get around' this issue to a certain extent, but having never tried with two different cards, im not 100% sure!

I think you can only use different cards in Vista, but then you have to have both cards plugged into a monitor or thinking they are plugged into a monitor. You then have to extend your desktop to the new cards. You may have to reinstall the drivers each time you put a new card into the machine.

In my experience you can use different cards in XP but you should always put the card with the least shader processors in the top slot. When I add a new/different card in windows tells me it has found it and installs the correct driver but If I don't re-install the drivers I get the message from the folding client about the secondary card not being supported. In other words...

reinstall the drivers each time you put a new card into the machine.

i have no issue using a 9800 gx2 and a 8800 gts 320 in the same box under vista 32
you have to extend the desktop onto the other card and either plug in a monitor or as i have done use a dummy load.
the dummy load is easy to do using a dvi to vga adapter and 3 x 75ohm resistors

I agree with cards of the same generation 8800 = 9800 = x2 = 9800 gx2

Not too sure if you mix generation like 280 and 8800 but hey I don't *really* know as all mine are similar generation as well.
