Ok, so my friend wants a rig for her son. Will mainly be used for browsing, mail etc plus a few games played. The cost must include case and monitor.

Can it be done?

Cheers.

get bigger monitor if 17" is too small or get better graphics card if x1950 isnt enough

Thanks jak.

The 17" widescreen should be ok, oop's forgot to add vista oem so that adds 70.49

How does this look guys?

I would go for a 17 or 19" square, instead of a widescreen - especially in 17" they are very small.

If you drop the second case then you should be pretty close to the budget.

I'd change the hard drive to the Hitachi 160gb as it only costs about a quid more but offers double the space.

I'd agree with Duke about the monitor.

Finally is there any real reason for going with 32bit Vista? I don't see any major benefits to it over XP unless you are going with the 64bit version, aside from the fact that it is newer and will therefore be supported for longer but that is a pretty minor argument in it's favour.

The only problem is that it's gone over budget now, and a 17" or 19" square are even dearer.

As for Vista, I've used it for a year, and have had no problems with it, apart from the slow transfer speeds.

I've rejigged it slightly and changed a couple of parts but you are only £6 over budget or if you get Vista 32bit then you are within budget.
