Hi All,

Im due to get my sparkly new box later today from OCUK of course (Ive gone for the Cataclysm Hogger),

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-168-OE&groupid=43&catid=1892&subcat=

So heres my question,

I realise that overclocking reduces the lifetime of components. My hogger is OC`d to 4.2 GHz from 3.06. Is it worthwhile me setting the clocks back to the default when I dont need the CPU power (such as downloading huge updates for games overnight (see wow))?

I understand the i series pentiums have "turbo boost" technology. Does this step the core speed when required?

Am I being overly paranoid or is this recommended?

There is also the environmental and electricity impact aswell, I dont want to be burning loads of electricity for no reason.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

Well if you make sure SpeedStep and C-States are enabled in the BIOS it'll use as little power as possible when not doing CPU-intensive stuff.

Indeed this seems to be the case, thanks. Ive powered it up and amazed how quiet it is for the spec... Well done OC on a great build, looks amazing inside too!

I doubt if you will ever see the end of your components lifetime due to overclocking unless you intend to keep it for 15-20 years.

Just leave it be and enjoy it as is.

You are more likely to see an increase in electricity bills if you leave it running 24/7 (obvious) so wouldnt worry about that either.
