Hi

I am going to buy one of the new draft N modem routers, the
Netgear DG834N 270Mbps RangeMax NEXT Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router

i also want to get adapters for a PC and a Laptop but does it matter if a get the gigabit or non gigabit editions - they are the same price but the product descriptions don't seem to make it clear what the difference is

i have an old(ish) PC/LAptop and don't have gigabit LAN, but i might when i upgrade

so am i ok getting the gigabit edition adapters - i assume they will work with non gigabit networks as well? (though if so not sure why they bother producing 2 versions)

OR - have i got hold of the wrong end of the stick here?

many thanks

PS - what sort of adapter would i need if i wantd to stream media wirelessly to a television?

Sorry are you talking about getting ethernet pci cards for your computers or a pre-n wireless adapter?

If wired: yes you may aswell just get a gigabit card, they will work without any trouble on a 10/100 network and would allow you to use gigabit in future if you upgraded your router, or how I have my setup at home:

DG834N -> 8 Port Gigabit Switch -> all wired clients.

hi wij

i want both a wfi preN PCI adapter and a wifi preN card for my laptop - bother of these have gigabit and non gigabit options

my laptop and PC don't have gigabit ethernet

however i am planning on buying the gigabit wfi cards so its future proof - i was just trying to check they would still work with my non gigabit gear

thanks

It seems Netgear are confusing this issue as branding a 300Mbit card as "gigabit" is just stupid (to me anyway).

As you have a netgear router it would make sense to buy the Netgear branded cards as this would help to ensure that you get the best performance from them and compatibility, especially as 802.11n is not a ratified standard yet, and no manufactuerer has to guarentee their products will work with anybody elses, especially as Netgear use a kind of "turbo" mode to get it upto 300Mbit/sec.

From what I can work out the difference between the 270mbit cards and 300mbit "gigabit" cards is the technology that they use to boost the speed. The 300Mbit ones use somthing calle d "top dog" and the 270 ones use "intensifi" as the DG834N is a 270Mbit product and its page on OcUK says "intensifi" I would probably suggest using the 270mbit ones to get the better performance.

PCI Card ^

Might be worth just checking with OcUK or Netgear if this is definately the case, but thats how it looks to me anyway.
