A bit of advice on possible dumped cars please...

Hi there,

There's been a Toyota Lucida people carrier parked on our street (on-street parking so nothing out of the ordinary there!) for the last 3 months. It has a valid tax disc until the end of August but I believe it's been dumped as it hasn't moved an inch in that time. I've asked round a few of the neighbours and nobody admits to owning it.

Is there anything I can do to get this car removed while it still has tax? I'm thinking of reporting it to the local council as I need to contact them anyway to report someone for parking on the street with no tax, but I'm not sure if they'll do much. These two cars make it much more difficult for the gf or I to be able to park our cars near to the house.

Thanks,

Andy

I had a similar situation a while back. The police weren't interested as it wasn't reported stolen and it had valid tax. Having not moved it for 4 months, the owners renewed the tax so someone definitely knew it was there!

My assumption would be that it belongs to someone who has either died/gone into hospital or someone who is banned from driving. I'm thinking the latter in my case as it eventually moved.

Edit: I'm not endorsing this but a more unscrupulous person might jack up the rear wheels on a trolley jack (assuming it's a manual and not left in gear) and roll it somewhere else while the road is quiet.

I've heard you can claim an abandoned vehicle. However i have no idea how. Maybe email dvla and ask if it's possible. It goes along the line of filling in the form and waiting for the dvla to see if they can find an owner if they can't you get the car after x amount of weeks.

I can't prove it but I think the people carrier belongs to the owner of the local corner shop. He seems to buy cars and then sell them on. He currently has two Pug 406s parked right outside our house (one of them being the car with the out of date tax disc I'm going to report, the other still has tax but hasn't moved for a few days). Both are ex-taxis as I can see where the stickers used to be.

He's always doing this and I'm fed up with asking him to move his cars so this time I'm just reporting them and hopefully he'll stop doing it. To give you an idea of the sort of man he is he rented one of his houses in the street to a gang of Albanian illegal immigrant and when they started doing drug deals and threatening locals with knives he claimed there was nothing he could do about it! He will do anything to make money. Thankfully the police took the matter more seriously.

Although I've always fancied one, you wouldn't want this Lucida! It's covered in big dents and scratches, the wing mirrors have been broken off, and the windscreen appears to be held on by masking tape!

Adz - I don't think it belongs to someone who's died/lost their license. I tend to notice who has what car on the street, and I'd never seen this one before it appeared in the same spot it's been in for 3 months.

I had a transit van dumped on my rear drive for 3 months until i finally found out whos it was and threatened them with £50 a week storage back dated 3 months and towing fees.

The council were absolutley useless, so were the police. the council informed me i would have to have the van towed at my own expense. But they were just BSing me, Accoring to the DVLA, the council is responsible for removal of any abondoned vehicles, wether they are on public or private property. its states this fact on the DVLA website.

After i got rid of the van some guy in an untaxed modded XR3i was using my rear drive as his personal parking space, After i got through to someone at the police who knew what they were talking about, they told me to put notice on the car, giving 24hrs notice of removal. Then i could just get the car scrapped. Needless to say the car disappeared a couple of hours later.

Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation.

np, I'll ask my mate at work tonight. He should be in. He's apparently trying to claim an abandoned car. To get the v5 in his name. I'll ask him how he's gone about it. Worth a try if it's possible.

slight problem with that link

its for unlicensed vehciles. Vehicle in question has a valid tax disc, and as far as i can see, if the owner is the corner shop guy, reporting an abandonned vehicle thats in the same street as the owner isnt going to go anywhere

theres nothing criminal being committed.

only thing i can think of is to have a word with the police non emergency line. Report that these multiple cars hes got scattered over the street are causing a public menace

ive seen people like this get ASBOs for thinking that as long as the vehicle is taxed, they cant be touched.

Might be open to being charged with having an un-insured vehicle

Really?

I live in a terrace and some people are taking the mick with multiple cars and works vans at the same house making parking a nightmare (we only have one car).

I know where I can get double decker buses for £2k taxed and MOTed but that might throw my idea right out of the window :D.

it might be worth while reporting him to i think trading standards or maybe the tax office as he might not have a license to trade in motor vehicles

I think it's a V20. I did it with the jag in the garage next to mine because things were being stolen and I couldn't find the owner. You need the reg number and chassis number then after a few weeks and £20 the V5 is yours with the previous owner's name and address :)
