OK so I have the money for a mac and really want to buy one. I never travel anywhere with a PC so don't want a laptop which really narrows it down to an imac or mac mini.

What's stressing me out is the fact that both are due for an update soon. Sod's law i'll buy one and then 1 month later an awesome update is released. However, i don't want to wait months and not see anything, that'll be a waste of time.

I don't play a huge amount of games, only Diablo 3 and GW 2 (when it's released) and i've got a PC for those.

For me it boils down to the RAM and HDD, 4GB of ram is pretty poor and on my PC i've become accustomed to the speed of SSD drive's which cost crazy money from apple. From what i understand, the newer imac's and mini's will come with more ram and ssd drives as standard which is what's making me wait.

I'm not very patient and strongly dislike the secretive nature of Apple.

lol seriously?

secretive nature of Apple? They have one of the most predictable product cycles of any company!! Even will replace your product if its immediately outdated!

It sounds like you don't actually need one, so just wait.

Or do something like pick up a cheap old c2d mac mini if you just want to play with OSX/ to tide you over until the new ones.

I've got a 2011 mac mini... 2.7 ghz i7, 4gb ram and the radeon gfx.

I'll slap an ssd and more ram in eventually, but it's plenty quick enough at the moment.

You don't have to get the newest shiniest mac... I had a old 1.6ghz core duo mini before and it was fine ....!

lol apple secretive

yes they don't publish specs in advance of announcements but you can set your watch by their product cycle, don't update if the macrumours product cycle says not to

My advice would be to wait. There's a very high chance that a new iMac with USB3 ports and Ivy Bridge is just around the corner.

With regards to using an iMac, I have the 3.1Ghz i5 version and it runs Diablo 3 perfectly at 2560x1440. 4GB of RAM isn't an issue. I think I paid about £60 for an extra 8gb which just fits into a little slot on the back. You can also retrofit aftermarket SSDs in various ways but this is not for the faint hearted as you need to lift the entire glass screen off to get at the innards.

They're fabulous machines though. The screen on them is second only to crazy Retina display MBP.
