Got another build on my hands, I should start charging.
My sons mate is on the market for a new build but with a budget of £850.

From his old PC I am going to be using the Corsair 550 PSU and a 1 TB HDD, for storage.

Can you please go over my parts list and see how I am doing.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £827.86
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Cheers...

The STRICT £850 budget has to be kept to. I chose the retail CPU and advising him to get a better cooler as soon as. May suggest a All-In-One water cooler.

No OS needed. He has a Win 7 disc but will be taking advantage of the free Win 10 upgrade.

N.B.

Not really up on GPU's and what makes a good one. Hows my choice ?

Wait for the RX 480 ?

The board below doesn't support SLI, but you would need a bigger psu than 550W anyway.

Cheers for the replies guys...

Wait for the RX 480......

When, why and how much might those be ?

Looks like a good solid balanced build that should perform very nicely.

Only thing I would change is the GTX 970. Not because it's a bad card (far from it), but because the AMD RX 480 is due out at the end of the month and this will likely be very competitive with the 970 on price and offer performance similar to the 980. It might also put some pressure on Nvidia prices if you prefer to stick with them.

If you want to get started with the build now, use the integrated graphics on the 6600k as a temporary solution, they are passable enough to get things up and running.

They are due around June 29th. Hopefully they will be around £230 ish so on par with a GTX 970 price wise. Benchmarks show performance similar to a GTX 980. If real world performance is as good then it looks like being a very good gpu for the money.

They should be up for pre-order pretty soon so if your Sons mate is not in a rush then wait for a week or so.

Thanks very much for those replies.
I am happy to know my suggested bits are ok.
I will point out the points bout the new GPU coming out and will be best to wait a short while.

I wonder though. I have planned to do the free Win 10 update. If I do this with NO GPU ( using on board ) then add the GPU once they are available will this deactivate the free Win 10. I believe a major PC change does this.
Or does a GPU change not alter the activation state ?

Thanks again guys. It is good to get the conformation my bits are ok.

Its only changing the motherboard that deactivates the windows, changing the GPU shouldn't cause any issues :)

Can we talk thermal paste for a sec ?

I have two tubes of paste,
1x Arctic MX-2 - Has been opened and used, sealed with the cap.
1x TG-1 - Unopened.

Both are a couple of years old now. My question is will both or none of these be ok on a new build system ?
Would it be better to buy new stuff ?

I guess you'd just have to have a look at it, so long as its not kinda dried up or separated or something like that it should be fine. Most coolers will come with their own thermal paste anyway, so can just use that.

edit, reading back I see you're using a cooler you already have, so feel free to ignore me :P

thanks guys...

Just been talking to my sons mate.
He is ordering the bits today, no GPU and will buy a newer one later on this year. he says in a couple more months.

Two changes. a different case and he has gone for an All In One water cooler from Corsair.

New basket.

The review on the case reads well..

I would reuse the Cooler Master Seidon and save the £90.

The Phanteks Enthoo Pro M is a nicer case for the same/less money imo. Just get a 140mm fan for the front.

Also the Gigabyte i5 660K/Z170X-SLI bundle is cheaper. There is also a slightly cheaper non SLI bundle.
