Any recommandations for a new driver? I'm a grown man, not a teenager.

I'm looking at 4k-5k range. Can go higher if the car is really good.

I'm thinking of a 3 door hatchback and eco car.

First car – get something cool as it will probably be the car you remember having the most fun in!

Don’t be scared of a car for being too big as there isnt really anything to worry about.

If I were in your position I would probably spent 2k on an mx5 despite the winter setting in. buying cheap is a good idea as the chances of pranging it are much higher as a new driver. they are great fun and you will learn a lot about the road very quickly in a little RWD car. They are not too powerful and sensible on fuel but insurance can be a bit steep for what they are.

Something like a Ford Focus/Mondeo, or Seat Leon/Ibiza comes to mind.

The Focus/Mondeo always comes well recommended on here, I simply mentioned the Leon/Ibiza as I went with the Leon as my first car, in a similar price bracket, years ago though. If you're fixed on 3-door, then it would be Ibiza rather than Leon.

Will probably help if you give an idea of things like how far you expect to drive each year. This will affect diesel vs petrol options.

If you do decent mileage, then whatever diesel hatch is best recommended but if its for less miles <15,000 iirc? I was very happy with my civic. 2001-2006 EP shape, 1.6SE Vtec
Comfortable, easy drive, relatively economical and not a thing went wrong bar consumables

Can be had for 2-3k these days if you don't want a facelift, spend the rest of insurance, servicing and rainy day cash
