Hi,

My computer decided not to boot up after I changed out a DvD drive.

All thats happing now when i try to power up my machine is a series of short continuous beeps. I checked the motherboard manual trouble shooting section and it says continuous short beeps: Power error.

There is no signal going to the monitors which is fair enough however there is power going in as the cpu fan, vga fan, case fans etc and are all working as normal, and i double checked all the cables so im thinking its got to be the vga card or motherboard???

Im not to sure but any advice welcomed :)

Disconnect the DVD drive and try again, if it works, you may need to change the jumpetrs on the back of the drive. It could be that its set to 'Master', and it needs to be 'Slave', or vice versa. Or, the PSU might not be powerful enough for the new drive. Are the jumpers set the same as the old drive?

Thanks for the reply PhillyDee.....

I just tryed disconnecting the DVD with no luck same goes for the jumper stttings, the old DVD was set to master and my CD-RW was slave, I swaped them around and its still beeping its T**s off. :(

Heres my spec
550w PSU
GIGABYTE GA-8IPE1000 socket 478
P4 3200ghz
9800pro
1gb ram
M-audiophile 24/96

Well, the PSU certainly has more than enough power to run that. Did you maybe disconnect any motherboard power connectors (Both the 4-pin and 24-pin) and forget to reconnect them? I know the beeping you mean, its a mental noise. Happened to me when i forgot to plug the 4-pin power back into the mobo. Thats all I can think of however. Must be a dodgy connection somewhere. Try unplugging and replugging in the motherboard connectors. It must be one of them as its the only way to throw up a power error.

Thanks again PhillyDee for participating in my time of trouble-shooting ;)

I gave everything you sayed a try bud, but still no luck and i am still confused how this happend in the first place, all i can think of is i have probably knocked somthing when swaping DVD`s and fried the motherboard somehow but i aint no guru whe it comes to pc`s so that might just be a load of ....

Gigabytes trouble shooter is b*lls, most are tbh, with all this type of technology you would think they would be able to be more Specific or user friendly about this type of stuff rather than just "power error"

Meh. They are all like that. Just on the Asus boards it tells you instead of beeping. Sorry I cannot help you further, but no doubt someone will be on tomorrow and give you the answer straight away.

it isnt a hiper psu is it?

check that you havn't broken a psu cable somewhere or got one trapped when fitting the drives... also try resetting bios

Hey paul,

I just checked all the cables and reset the bios still no luck :(
oh and its not a hyper PSU its akasa, this is wierd i think my new house is haunted allready

have a try booting the pc without any drives apart from the hdd... also what is your full system spec

Hi Paul thanks for sticking around..
I Just tried booting it as you mentiond bud, still the same tho :(

Heres my spec
akasa 550w PSU
antec case
GIGABYTE GA-8IPE1000 socket 478
P4 3200ghz
9800pro
1gb kingston ram
M-audiophile 24/96

19" sillicon graphics
17" Flatron L1710S

Recheck all the connections, remove all sticks of memory, add 1 in at a time, see if that helps.

You could knocked something by accident while adding the new drive perhaps?...

Just to throw another suggestion in there.. ;)

dis connect the RAM, then reconnect, and/or reset your motherboard

had persistent beeps on my original PC, turned out that if i re-seated the RAM in their slots it would fix the problem
