Hi all,

I currently have the following setup:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Winchester
Point of View 7800 GS Graphics Card
Asus A8V Rev.2 Deluxe Motherboard
Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200C2PT

I'm now planning to move to a Intel E6600 and a Nvidia 8800 GTS setup while I can still sell my old stuff and get some money back.

So I need a motherboard, memory and powersupply. I was thinking about the 620 Corsair PSU, but what recommendations would people have for memory and a motherboard. It would be good to overclock at some point but I think the difference in the system will mean I won't need to do it at the start.

What are you thoughts and recommendations?

Cheers, Russell

Yep, thanks, yes I was planning to get 2GB of memory so it was to clarify which memory would be the best for a novice to overclock.

A friend of mine got the OCZ I have to 468 MHz, which isn't exactly a stellar overclock. Micron chips are the way to go apparently.

I'd go with cheap PC6400 memory and a DS3, P5B, or P5N-E.

The Corsairs are really good PSUs but I think 620W is overkill for a single card system, unless you have loads of hard drives.

Okay, after reading a little more, I think I'd be better to put less into the CPU and Motherboard and go for the 8800 GTX.

Last question : which would be the best motherboard to go for with either a E4300 or E6300? Would it still be the Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard?

Cheers, Russell

yeh that does seem to be the pick of the bunch in the sub £100 c2d motherboard race, and i would pair it with a e6300 and go for some high fsb

How does the following look?

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
Maxtor Diamondmax 21 320GB STM3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)

Cheers, Russell

That all looks brilliant although I strongly suggest NOT getting a Maxtor as they are poo, although they are now owned by Seagate iirc so they might be better. I would advise getting a Segate 7200.10 either 320Gb (great value for money and quiet and fast) or a Samsung SpinPoint :)

Thanks for the help guys, and all the opinions in the forums. In the end, I ordered the following

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.13GHz (1066FSB)
Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ST3250620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache

After reading reviews, I decided to go a little better with the graphics card from what I was first thinking.

Cheers, Russell
