A Colour Changing CPU cooler?

Okay, this is super cool. CoolerMaster has a coating for CPU coolers that changes colour with temperature that they're currently developing for use in consumer products:

My system can already do that with LEDs, including setting the thresholds across a colour spectrum of my choosing.
This seems like a gimmick they forgot to actually market 15 years ago.

LEDs can't show you temperature diffusion across the cooler or differential temperature, it can only light up according to the probe in the CPU (or case or whatever).

The 90's are back baby.. it's the colour change t-shirts all over again...

I can see the logic in a display to show temps but I'm not sure this paint is really going to do much imo. I can see a use in a testing environment though.

Yeah, I think it's a lot more relevant to testing and development than home use. I guess it might show up some airflow deficiencies, and the paint itself might be usefully deployed in a range of other uses (I can see it being useful for motherboard heatsinks, for example). But for most people it's going to be nothing more than a cute gimmick.

Doesn't stop it being cool

Diffusion only matters if your fans are broken or mismatched to the heatsink. Once that's sorted and everything works, it's pretty useless...

100% a gimmick. Don't need it. You not looking at your cooler all the time. It's obv when the system is hot the fans spin quicker and a bit more noisy.

I can see why it's not for everyone. I am glad that there is so much choice these days. I'm old enough to remember when everything was beige and you risked serious injury putting you hand inside one, those lethally sharp edges!

im sure i had some toy cars that colour changed when in hot or cold water.
id prefer this paint over leds.

Yes but it would impact thermal emissivity/conductivity at least a bit.
