Hello all,

First time PC builder here who is having some troubles, pretty much falling at the first hurdle.

So, I have purchased everything and it came last weekend (all from OC's). Ive put it all together and I get nothing on the display, no POST, no Splash screen, not even any beeps! However, everything spins up, the CPU fan, the disk drives etc. Ill run you through my hardware:

Mobo: Asus P8Z77 -V LX2
Case: Antec 302 Three Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
PSU: OCZ ZS Series 650W
Processor: Intel Core i5-3570K
RAM: Some Kingston stuff. It looks fairly generic (that wasn't purchased from here, I got it from a friend)

Now I shall run you all what I have connected currently:

1 HDD
1 DVD Drive
24 Pin PSU connecter
On board VGA Cable
1 Stick of RAM
The 4 pin PSU connecter
CPU
CPU Fan
The Power/Reset/HDD Activity light plugs

And what I have done to try and sort my issues:

Checked the 4 pin PSU cable is seated well
Checked the 24 pin PSU cable is seated well
Used the other 4 pin PSU plug (it comes with two lots of 4 incase the mobo requires and 8 pin)
Tried two different monitors
Tried HDMI (onboard)
Tried VGA (onboard)
Tried all the sticks of RAM individually
Unplugged the Reset button/Sound/HDD Activity Light/Power button Light cables
Unplugged the graphics card
Unplugged the wifi card
Reseated the CPU
Reseated the CPU Fan (Removed previous thermal paste, then reapplied)
Taken out the power lead and CMOS battery for 1 minuite
Unplugged the USB 3 Cable
Unplugged the Case fans
Made sure the CPU fan is plugged into the CPU_FAN slot

I am literally at a loss. Could it be a dead mobo? I have asked around and it has been suggested that the PSU may be dead, but I have no other one to use to see if that is the case.
I think a colleague of mine made a post on here actually, related to this on my behalf a week or so ago, but that was before I did all of the above.
Anywho, any help or advice would be appreciated

Thank you

No post, no splash screen means no power or a major incompatibility. Plug in a motherboard speaker. It's like a quid. Some motherboards bip when it's gone fubar. The sequence of bips indicate the fault. Check the manual for POST errors.

Also remove everything, and try outside the case (I know, a pain), unplug anything unnecessary, and do the paperclip test on the PSU alone. At least you'll know if you got power.

I would guess at the ram being incompatible, the board won't have built in speaker, unless someone has added one in? You'll see it bottom right of the board, two wires with a round black disc on the end

Old motherboards used to have speakers, nowadays, it's more of an extra. maybe in your motherboard accessories. I didn't have one but my mobo has a LCD display for POST.

I forgot, but you can do a quick check on the PSU, the PSU fan should spin, or at least attempt to spin. Careful if you do the the paperclip test, you need to make sure you use the right ports :) And be very gentle with the video card if you decide to test the build outside the case, as it won't be supported and will be hanging loose.

Finally, you could have a short on your motherboard from the case. make sure your standoffs (the little brass screws that attach your motherboard to the case) are set correctly, and you don't have a standoff hanging around in the middle of the motherboard tray (the part of the case where the motherboard is screwed on).

Hence why building outside the case is often recommended (see video), especially if you have no boot. BTW on a P8Z77, you don't even need a video card to boot up. It should have HDMI / DVI from the motherboard. The external video card could interfere with the boot sequence.

Hello again all,

Right, so, turns out I did have a spare PSU around (one that I know works) and I tried it with that, still nota.
I also tried this alternative PSU with the mobo out of the case, as suggested and that also didn't work.
Currently im not using a video card, its plugged into the onboard video via VGA.

As for the RAM being incompatible, that is literally the last thing I can think that it might be. Although if the RAM was incompatible wouldn't it at least show the splash screen?

Yea perhaps I should go pick a speaker up. What a ballache though. Might see if a friend has one I can borrow, rather then having to wait.

When I do get a speaker into it, and if there isn't any beeps, whats the next step?

Thanks

Right, so, I managed to get hold of a speaker and it does infact give me some beeps! One long and two short, which, according to the Asus site means that there is a RAM problem!
Okay so my RAM should work in this mobo as the specs for the mobo appear to accept any 1333 type, which is what this is, non-ECC etc.
I bought the RAM off eBay a while back and went on the listing to have a look, and it says the RAM isnt compatible with Intel systems? Now do I know even less about PC's then I thought, or is it not possible for RAM to be AMD or Intel specific??
The page is in terrible English, but heres the link:

I dont wont to shed out a load of money for some new RAM if the error beeps actually aren't the RAM (it worked in an older system) and it turns out to be something else. Obviously if it is a high chance that some new proper sticks will work, I will fork out for them. Also, Iv'e tried different sticks in different slots, taking into account first the manufacturers recommended troubleshooting slots.

Thank you all

This says:
Memory issue: Beep (1 long 2 short)
A Clean the Golden Finger of memory
B Clean the memory slots
C Leave only one memory stick to test
D If convenient, please change different memory to test again

Reseating memory sticks one at a time may help, if you can try known working memory that would help. The manual will tell you which slots to use.

If not you need either 4gb or preferably 8gb of ddr3 1600mhz

PC building can be frustrating, check every thing, double check and check again!

I built my first rigs with a PC pro on hand, but once you have solved it and it is up and running it is a big accomplishment.

Some Pros will be about and give you some more advice, best of luck

Operating voltage:1.8V

That's where you've gone wrong. Get some 1.5 volt memory. 1.8 volts is for the old phenom systems, I believe.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your responses!

jpod, thanks for the reply, I did follow that guide but to no avail :(

olivier renault I never noticed that voltage difference! That would make sense also as the RAM was in a Phenom based system prior.
Ill go ahead and purchase some now.

Thank you olivier renault, ill be sure to update you guys when it arrives.

That fixed the problem! Thanks a lot for your help!

All boots and everything now, although I'm getting a fair few amount of BSOD's displaying various messages, which is a pain. However, I'm in the process of figuring these out so.

Regardless, thanks a lot both of you!

Chris
