At the moment, Ive got a Pentium D 820 in my media center. Performance is fine but Its a right struggle keeping it cool, and its only gonna get worse when the weather gets hotter.

Am i right in thinking an Intel E2140 would be the best cpu for me? Will it be much cooler? or will i just waist more money... What are the watts of a D 820 compared to a E2140m anyone know?

Also speedstep doesnt seem to work on this 820 cpu, I'd like it to run at low mhz when its not doing anything, but I dont see any option for it in the bios like you do with a C2D.

Its currently idling around 60'C  And with no speedstep like you said, its really not the greatest cpu for a media center. I've had to already turn up the case fans to compensate, its hardly ideal.

Hopefully i can still get a few quid for it and buy a E2140 for £50. My motherboard supports C2D, so it should support these too (maybe need a bios update to get the right name)

Cheers

The 9xx Pentiums are different as they are Preslers, smaller core, where as the 8xx are essentially 2 prescots stuck togother.

Ive reseated the heatsink twice now, as I thought it was high. But if the heatsink wasnt on properly, it wouldnt get hot, but it does.

And this isnt a desktop case Im using, it a media center that is also in a cabinet without any airflow.

Why spend a few quid when i dont need the speed, the lower the mhz the better I feel for this box, it's so toasty.
