A couple of GPU questions

Hi All,

I am currently runnning two 4870s, they do ok but sound like a helicopter taking off under load.

I am purposefully looking for a quieter card and was thinking about a single gtx580.

First question, will it be quieter?

Second question, is there any need to buy the 3072MB ram version when my max resolution is 1680 x 1050??

Thanks,

Dave

In my personal nooby opinion. Stick to ATI Cards and go newer you will find a nice Xfire capable card like the 6770s rather than going nVidia and getting a lower amount of everything from Shading Cores, Processing Cores to the Core Clock. Plus the price!
The 4870s and the 4890s were very loud cards.

Hi,

1. Very likely, yes. Pretty much any model should run at least somewhat quieter than two 4870's, some very much so.

2. No.

Additionally, it may pay you to wait a few weeks, AMD are releasing their 7000 range in December.

You can't compare the architectures in that way, they are both designed very differently. :)

If you really want a 580 the MSI 580 Twin Frozr II is a decent card and has a really good cooler so should not need to get too noisy. They are on offer for £350 in ocuk shop which is a great deal and 1.5GB should be enough for that resolution.

Thanks guys, my system is:

Asus P67Pro
i7
120GB SSD + 1TB HDD
8 meg 1600 RAM
1000W PSU

Hence I kinda want a new quieter card to fit in and run the DX11 games.

Seeing as the new ATI cards are coming soon i might wait a bit. Are they gonna be lots faster than the NVidia cards?
