A couple of lapping questions??

Hi,

After receiving some advice on these forums I have decided to upgrade my hsf, case fans, tidy up the insides of my pc for better air flow & lapp my processor & possibly the new hsf.

The reason I say I am going to lapp the hsf is because I am thinking of buying this one

This one.

And I have heard there are issues with this model due to the base not being entirely flat but please tell me if I'm wrong.

So my main question is regarding lapping the CPU: -

I have read a lapping guide I found on these forums which was helpful but do I use standard sandpaper from B & Q & what grain do you recommend I use?

Also, do I lapp the HSF in exactly the same way I do with the cpu?

How do I know when I have finished lapping?

Any advice would be appreciated.
 
There was an article in Custom PC about lapping your CPU. I'll dig it out and scan the page for you. Pretty indepth guide.
 
You use wet and dry, NOT Sandpaper. Its best to see how flay your cpu is using a good steel rule, or a stanley knife blade. If it looks flatm dont do it. If not, there are some guides about somehwere. Strart with a P220 and work upto P800 (minimum). Keep it wet at all times.

So are you saying that if my CPU looks flat then DO NOT lapp?

What about the hsf?

TBH it is up to you, but ask yourself a few questions;

How far do you wish to OC?
What are your current idle/ load temps?
and how much you wish to spend?
 
it might not be terribly welcome advice but your best plan might be to ditch the QX6700 and switch to a G0 Q6600, iirc QX6700s were all B3 weren't they? They just run mega hot.

Lapping might help but it'll only really help your load temps and only if your cooling is up to the job in the first place.
 
I spent hours lapping my C2D and tuniq tower, and it didn't make much difference. I went up to grade 1500 wet 'n dry. I found the CPU quite easy to do, but the TT was a pain in the ***. My C2D was not flat, but was by the time i finished. However I can not fit my TT correctly due to my case/mobo combination and i think its this more than anything thats giving me slightly warmer core temps than i should have.

You can buy packs of various grades of wet 'n dry for a few quid. I got mine from a auction site, but there is also a very good website that sells packs. if you want i can email you the address.
 
various websites sell lapping kits, if you do a google search for "premium lapping kit" you should find a UK supplier

The one I have always used comes with all the paper you will need plus instructions.. really easy
