Ok, first off:

A motherboard that supports DDR3...or DDR2 memory canpresumably support all previous DDRs...e.g. a DDR3 motherboard will suport DDR2 and DDR1?

Can motherboards that support SATA2 support SATA?...using the same ports?

My PSU says the SATA power connectors are for optical drives...i have SATA 2 hard drives...i guess the power connectors can be used for the hard drives too?

no ddr3 or ddr2 isnt backwards compatable.

Yes sata and sata 2 are the same ports

And the sata poweer cables should be for the harddrive

Ok kool cheers for that.

hmmm maybe in the PSU book it says there for the hard drives :S i cant maind...anyway i presume i can use them for ether that HDD or the optical CD drives?

SATA power cables will work with any device that takes an SATA power connection :)
Chances are if the manual just hasn't been updated/written very well (I personally believe the lost tribe of Amazonian Gibbers are currently working as translators for a large number of companies).

My machine currently has a pair of SATA1 HDD's, SATA optical, and an SATA2 HDD being powered via SATA connectors.
