I been on the hunt for a nice ST of late (well the past week and a bit)

What is the main difference between the 5 and 6 speed models

I saw a nice 5 Speeder as Shah Motors the other day

http://www.shahcarsales.co.uk/used-cars/search-results?make=FORD&model=MONDEO

Went for a test drive and all seemed good, it's in very nice condition, someone retrofitted the 6 speed shifter nob (dont ask me why ) but it is actually the 5 speed varient, the guy i spoke to at the dealership seemed a nice chap and the car was is very nice condition inside and out.

I reckon i could get it for £3500 with a bit of haggling

I'm going to look at a few others, but i have to say this one seemed to set a good standard, condition was very very nice. But since i only been looking for just over a week i'm still finding my feet a bit as far as prices etc goes

6 speed gearbox is more robust.

5 speed pre-facelift cars have the older interior, and didn't come with Sony HU's.

I'd always go for a facelift car, and I wouldn't want one that's been molested like that one has. Nankang tyres on RS rims - no thanks!

Yes the tyres are a bit meh, but the rest of the car (gear nob aside) is actually very decent, i think the prev owner kept it in a garage as the condition was just two good for a 10 + year old parked on the street car.

I'll probably pass and go for the 6 speeder, a stronger box + an extra ratio is always welcome.

This. That's far, far too expensive for a chavved up prefacelift. Far too expensive. Yeesh.

They missed out on a fair amount of other things as well as the nicer centre console and 6 speed box.

You should be able to find a tidy 2005 model for that sort of money.

Stay away from that one, nearly 4k for a pre face lift is crazy money

There have been 3 face lifts in total

2003-2004 1st face lift
2005-2006 2nd
2006-2007 3rd

The first face lift was the biggest change which was the 6 speed and ECU changes along with the makeover interior.

2nd then had some exterior changes (rear lights, front grills, chrome bits) and they removed the boot release switch for some reason

3rd i think was just a few tiny cosmetic changes, red stitching inside and an st220 badge on front lower grill, the side skirts are slightly different too, a curve was bought into them which i never liked. oh youll also have to pay £460 a year to tax the march 2006 onwards model - ouch!

If 3.5k is your budget i would aim for a 2005 model, should be able to pick a nice one up for around that.

Pre facelift doors rust badly... Enough said.

Go for 53 onwards. I got my 54 plate with over the top FSH (serviced every 6 months), brand new Perelli P Zero tyres all around for £2900. Was up for more but I am a good haggler. :)

PB all the way! Never understood the love for that 'cherry red?' colour, it is like the colour of a rover... dank.

You take that back, you uncultured swine.

I much prefer Infra Red to PB and I'd rather have a dark grey or that other dark blue colour on a facelift model than PB. :)

PB is a lovely colour, especially when polished, or at night. It does stand out, looks great on a Mondeo. Not so much on a Focus. Not sure why that is.

The doors were in first rate order, i had a good look down all the hard to see bits and underneath and around the locks, bolts and nuts etc as this often tells you more about how the cars been kept

Tyres and strange gear nob change aside it's in beautiful shape, but have taken note of the fact it's the older interior and 5 speed box and for the money i have seen nice spec later cars so will pass on that one

I saw a 159 today and was impressed by that as well, i'm gonna get the first decent example of the ST220 or 159 i find, after having a go in both i think i'll be happy with either and as i'm quite a hard to please guy i think the extra choice of what are limited sales cars will mean the chances of me finding a nice clean example at a reasonable price will be much better
