So I've just bought and installed Crysis on Steam, however when I go to launch the game all I get is a black screen and have to Ctrl+Alt+Delete out of it... It went to the menu once but when I clicked on the menu it froze.

I have all the upto date drivers etc and my specs are as follows

  • Intel Core i7 920 D0
  • XFX Radeon HD 4870 xXx 1024MB
  • Foxconn Renaissance
  • Antec 900-2
  • Coolermaster Real Power 620w Modular
  • OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 Tri Channel
  • Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
  • Noctua NH-U12P
  • LG GH22NS40 22x DVD±RW
Not had this problem with any game before.... please help!

had a similar issue, mine was down to running more than one screen and when I set my profile to single screen it ran fine

Verify the game files in steam, this usually does the trick when something is amiss. Could have just installed wrong or missed a file.:)

I tried doing this twice, but it didn't fix anything...

The one time I managed to actually get to the menu it completley froze my system and I had to hit the restart button, is there anyway to check/change this without loading up the game?

I know this might sound a little stupid, but have you uninstalled and reinstalled it again?

Much to my dismay I've uninstalled the game only to be faced by the fact I have another 7hrs of Downloading it on my Crappy ADSL connection!

It could be that there is an issue with your video player as a string of videos are played when the game starts, starting with the EA logo, then Crytek logo then Nvidia etc.

I'd suggest finding the video files in your crysis installation folder and replacing them with empty text files of the same name. That then means you'll go straight to the game menu on startup - in fact its worth doing even if the videos do work as its tedious having to skip past them each time the game is started.

If it still doesn't work then my theory is wrong - my next area of attack would be the graphics drivers.

Maybe your firewall is blocking it from accessing the Internet during startup?

If so, pressing alt+tab or ctrl+alt+del then alt+tab to find firewall window to allow access.

All I can think of, your spec is fine.

Can you manually check one of the settings file and check if it has your resolution correct? That may prevent it displaying correctly. Just an idea.

try right clciking the short cut and disabling desktop composition. that worked for me. Altho since my reformat -_- the bugger wont let me change options. Everytime i do it crashs.

I'm running Windows 7 Home premium, which is all upto date...

I don't get what's going on with this, All I know like I say is that when I try to launch I get a black screen only now after a Ctrl+Alt+Delete it Tells me crysis has stopped working... So I uninstalled it, Downloaded it again after 7hrs and installed it only now I can't find the installation directory anywhere... It's like it doesn't exist...

I've tried everything to find it and try what you guys have recommended but it just isn't happening...

As of now I have uninstalled it again, tried to get rid of everything I think might be related... Though when I first installed it, it got me to install punkbuster and other things, second installation went through without any prompting!

I've found Steam is a little inconsistant as to where it puts its games. It will be in the steam folder somewhere either in steam apps or the folder with your login name.

I still think its your video player as I had exactly the same problem with COD:WAW.ie black screen on startup and then a not responding message. I was able to get round it by pressing the escape key which skipped past the video. I think Crysis doesn't allow skipping past the EA logo video so renaming the vid files as I described above, should take you straight to the game menu
