Best choice is a backup.
Second best might be testdisk.

As above, depends what you're trying to do.

Undelete a file
Undelete a partition
Recover files from a formatted partiiton
Get files from a damaged hard drive

Testdisk & Photorec sound a bit scary (as in skrew your drive up)
