Really like these shots, never really read up about how to do them though.

If #1 was landscape, would make a nice desktop :).
 
ya its smoke, some use either a black or white background and then take the shot, i think there should be some distance between the smoke and backdrop and also from the smoke to the lens. if its a black background its then inversed and colored??

There are many ways of doing this, however this is probably the best write-up i've found on the internet. Everyone will use a slightly different technique, I know I adapted it to get the shots I was after. Hope that helps. I would write up a tutorial myself, but there is no point re-writing it for the sake of it. It really depends on the equipment you have available etc...
