A Dead Passive Subwoofer

I've got an Onkyo HT-S3305 receiver which I've had since 2010. I recently moved and set it all up again using same cables etc as old house.

Realised last night the subwoofer isn't working. No sound coming through. Have fiddled with cable on both ends. Definitely fully connected.

Wondering what could be up? Likely a speaker fault or receiver fault? All other speakers are fine. Maybe it's the cable?

It's a passive sub so I am hoping that, if it's the speaker to blame, I can just buy a different passive sub?

Passive subs are typically not standard AV gear, they're usually bundled with non upgradable HTIB and PC speakers.

If it's dead then either a faulty connection or blown driver, there is no electronics inside the sub (unless it has crossover network)

You want to find a passive sub that has similar spec- because it's powered by the AV amplifier. Try connecting a battery to the sub it it makes no noise then it's dead.

Thanks for your reply. I'll look into that battery trick. Do you think there's a chance it could be the cable running from receiver to sub? The ends did seem a bit worn to me.

Update:

Wasn't the cable. I plugged the sub into a different speaker terminal and sound came through. So that ruled out the sub being the issue. Did a receiver reset and still got same. So it's a dead channel sadly.

Have just bought a much newer Onkyo receiver to replace it using same speakers etc for now. It was a good upgrade I think. Future proofs me for eventual speaker upgrade as passive sub does't really cut it and this receiver accepts both passive and active.
