Hi Guys,

My manager just instructed me to find out specs for a decent desktop + monitor, which will be used to create videos/graphics/audio possible 3d in the future. Im not too sure what a PC for this kind of stuff needs so I thought I ask you guys, as you know much more than me for sure :) She said there is no budget limit BUT to not go too crazy on it as we will have to buy 5 of them, so Im guessing a spec for £1000 and one for £2000 so she can pick one:)

Thank You

Do you also need the OS, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc? Or do you just need the case, all internal components and a monitor?

ah sorry forgot to mention, we already got the system, keyboard + mouse+ speakers. So all I need is the Case, all internals and the monitor

Thanks

This will be a goodwell rounded build without compromising on much. The monitor is entirely your choice really, if you need bigger monitors then maybe grab the DGM 27" IPS but it's circa £360 if I remember right. Case wise again, your choice. I presume you want something nice and quiet so put in the Corsair 550D.

- i7 for the raw processing power. This will help for any users that do rendering, editing, graphics work, etc.
- 256GB SSD for the OS and all of your main applications. This will keep them running nice and snappy.
- GTX 660 for Photoshop/CUDA and will help other apps that can be GPU accelerated.
- 16GB RAM. It's cheap as chips these days, for the work you do 16GB RAM will really help.
- 2TB HDD for storage. I presume in a working environment that all of your actual storage is kept server-side and not locally. So this could probably quite happily be dropped to either no secondary HDD and just have the 256GB SSD, saving you money. Or opt for a 500GB-1TB if it proves to be much cheaper and cost effective if you want to retain some kind of HDD in each PC.
- The PSU is a bargain and you don't need anything more powerful. It's a good combination of cost and performance.

It's something at least to get you started and a rough ball park figure. :)

EDIT: I also figure as this is for your work, they could well be VAT registered? Meaning this build only costs £1014.. :p

looking good :D

thanks man, I am not sure about VAT, I will need to ask her, but she's not in today...

- Will definitely need a bigger screen, currently have a setup of 2 cheap 22'' HP Compaq but the angles, colours are soooo poor its unreal, so thinking of getting a 27'' one for developing and one of the ones I have now on the side just for testing at different resolutions etc.

- Happy with the SSD, we do keep most of the things on the servers, but the network is pretty slow to read/write, so we tend to keep the files locally until the project is done. I am thinking of maybe having a RAID setup or whatever its called, to have the extra backups?

- Case looks great, would it be as quiet as a cheap workstation though?

- Cooler looks okay, but it seems the Silver Arrow Extreme is better for just 3 quid more

The rest seems alright, never heard of the TeamGroup RAMs though, arent they made by the OCuK?

Thank you :)

I didn't initially spec a cooler, I ninja edited one in. My thoughts were the same, it'll keep it nice and quiet (and cooler!).. :)

The case is quiet, comes with noise dampening material pre-installed, it ain't silent though obviously! The TeamGroup RAM I can't recall who makes it, but I'm sure quite a few well known big names out there use it in their own workstations from an article I read a few months ago.

- Why the 670 for a Workstation rig? The 660 I spec'd will handle CUDA well and is nearly £100 cheaper.
- Why go for a more expensive Mobo? He won't be overclocking etc.
- Not sure how that case is simple and sleek either! Personal opinion but it looks childish and the colours are awful.. :p How is the 550D I chose not suitable? That's as simple, sleek and quiet as it's going to get!
- Cooler I can agree with, it's cheaper, may not cool as well but if you want to stay on a lower budget then fair enough.
- SSD is debatable (against the 830) due to the difference in performance etc.

Here's my revised spec with a bigger monitor, changed the cooler for a cheaper one if needed.

You might want to add a Cpu, would help.

HAHAH no way, was wondering why with all those parts it was so cheap XD

ill respec in a mo. fair points sparx 660 is fine, cheaper mboard will do now that i need to add a cpu ill be making these changes XD ahah

also case is sleek. OCUK colours are not childish. colours are removable.

Right thanks guys, my mind is much clearer right now.
So I've mixed the specs of both of you guys:

1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £239.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £81.98
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 660 OC Twin Frozr 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £179.99
1 x Samsung 256GB SSD 830 Notebook/Apple Series SATA 6Gb/s KIT with Norton Ghost - (MZ-7PC256N/EU) £149.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian 550D Quiet Midi Tower Case - Black £119.99
1 x Corsair Enthusiast Series TX550M High Performance 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020001-UK) £59.99
1 x BeQuiet Shadow Rock Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM2+/AM3) £32.99
3 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £29.99 (£90.00)
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99

Total: £970

Now all I need is to make up my mind on the Monitor, I would prefer the Asus one, but Id prefer a 27''..so not sure on this one..and it turns out we want speakers as well as the ones we got are rather poor.

Right, I've spoken to my manager and she said we got £1500 per PC, so I am just thinking that we could add a better 27'' monitor (2560x1440), some decent 2.1 speakers, and maybe better CPU/gpu? or is it going to be enough to render graphics, 3d, audio, games in games software?

Oh and is it possible that OCuK would put the PCs together and test etc?

Depending on what programs your using I'd check if the GTX 660 is any good, I not completely convinced it's a good choice.

You already have Lucid Universal MVP Support with the Mobo/CPU.

If you want additional GPU acceleration for Adobe CS Products the GTX 660 should work though you will probably need to manually edit your CS6 configuration files and Adobe Support would probably not help with issues using this unsupported configuration.

If you want to play safe you'll need to look at the following list.
http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/premiere/tech-specs.edu.html

A very important issue is quality. Geforce vs. Quadro
http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Adobe-Premiere-Pro-CS6-GPU-Acceleration-162

"When gaming, precision is not really needed since one small artifact every 1000 frames is not noticeable to the human eye. When you get into video editing or simulation, however, one small artifact can cause big problems. In a professional environment, you want to know for sure that everything was completed properly the first time and that no small artifacts in the results."

So a Quadro 2000 or better card might be the way to go depending on the software you are going to use. To start with you could just run with the onboard and add the card when you know what you need.

Also for a work station PC the Antec P280 Super Midi Tower Case £84.98 is good and quiet.

Did you notice you have 3x 8GB RAM kits mate, presume you want 2x? :p Also I would get the LG DVD drive, I've heard the OcUK branded drives are a little loud.

You may as well go for 27" monitors. Otherwise you'll never get them 'upgraded' at a later date from the boss will you? Here's the full spec below (which is exactly what you put in your above post).. ;)

I added in these pretty awesome speakers that OcUK started to stock recently. Read some good reviews on them the other day, plus they'll look fantastic in the office! :D

Wiining spec above almost

seeing as you have moneys to spare

cahnge PSU to below seasonic one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-018-SS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2383

cahnge the I7 to the retail instead of OEM as this week only (till wednesday next week) the retail is cheaper than the oem and has 3 years warranty. if you not planning on buying until next week after wed, and have no plans of overclocking just get the normal 3770

Right, we definitely will be using Adobe Suite CS6, not sure yet about 3d software/gaming and audio.

whats the MVP?

RIght, I will look into it, thanks for the input.

yes I've added another 8gb of Ram, cheap as chips so might as well :D

exactly thats what I think, doubt we will get upgraded after this time so rather make the most of it. I guess the Hazro seems pretty decent, though I am not too sure on the company :/
