Hey all can any one help me. I have a fear of thunder and lightening which has got worse as i have got older. I feel kinda silly talking about it as most people seem to love storms

Its something i got off my mum she used to be really scared of them which in turn made me scared of them as i used to have to sit with her.

My fear got better i used to be able to sit though storms without too much trouble, then a few years ago i got caught out in a bad storm and it struck a building near where i was and after that i got worse.

Its got to the point where i am checking the weather every day as stormy season is coming up, if i know a storm is coming i tend not to go out and i will be on edge the rest of the day. I will check the sky a lot too for dark clouds and such. If a storm comes i tend to hide away from it go some where i cant see it and put music on through headphones so i cant hear it. Which i know is the worst thing to do for fear as the mor u run and hide from it the worse the fear becomes.

Its a really stupid fear as i know the chances of me been hurt in the storm are slim to none. Its jsut not something i seem to be able to control.

Has any one got any tips or advice how to overcome this or any sort of fear. I was thinking of hypnotherapy, has any one done this does it work?

I will be greatful for any advice as its really effexting my life !

I don't think anyone can give meaningful advice here mate. If you want to sort out the issue it's probably best you speak to a professional.

Sounds like a really bad phobia that has grown out of control. Have a search around on the internet for some therapists in your area or support groups for 'phobias'. If not, as Tute says contact your GP and they can put in touch with the right people.

Good luck!

Oh and you know it's also the worst thing to do because you might get struck by lightening in your bed?

I didn't read this on newsround originally... honest.

I remember a story of someone getting hit in their bed too!

My only advice for you sir, is never come over to Florida. The lightening capital of the world. AND where I happen to live nowadays. Both my next door neighbours have had their homes struck by lightening with all their major electrical devices blowing up, with each house needing re-wiring. AND a two foot deep, two foot wide trench of blown out grass, that went from a flag pole to the home, taking out the lanai in the process.

TBH, i'm now of the attitude if it roars stay indoors, and i do my best to uplug all major electric devices from the wall.. Cos I'd be mega annoyed if my plasma's got blown off the wall from a direct hit..

Yup those itty bitty storms in the UK are nothing to worry about m8.. The cure would be to come out here during stormy season, come home and dip your feet in the puddle and relax during a UK storm.

Nah sorry, to overcome a fear is to stare it right in the face.

And clearly there can be no negative effects from the patented thorpy "grow some nuts approach" right?

In some cases that can make the phobia even worse, people with phobias usually go into a situation they avoid expecting the worst, and the fact is that in a lot of cases they will find some way of making it seem worse than what it is. That can trigger panic attacks etc, and all that ends up doing is reinforcing the belief that the situation is to be avoided at all costs.
