A few 8800gt questions

I've had my 8800gt (maybe gts) for a while now but lately after it's been on for a few hours the fans starts to make a rumbling noise.
I've checked the fan speed and it actually runs 30rpm slower when this is happening.
I'm not overclocking and don't have any other problems apart from noise.

I've tried upping the speed from 30% default to 100% but this makes no difference to the RPM.
Am I right in thinking the speed is fixed on this card?

The cooler looks like a flat heat sink with a very thin fan attached to it, would it be ok to remove the fan and just replace it with a standard 90mm or 120mm fan?

I've looked for pictures of the stock cooler on the net but carn't seem to find any that match this card.

Its hard to give you advice without knowing what HSF you have.

If its a reference Nvidia heat sink then i doubt you would be able to replace the fan. You could swap it for something like this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ame=Akasa AK-VC03-BLUV Vortexx NEO VGA Cooler
but it will void your warranty and you would need to be handy with a screwdriver and confident enough to do the swap.

You may just need to clean fan and heat sink i use a small paint brush and a can of compressed air.

If your card still has warranty, which is possible as 8800GT's aren't that old, then just RMA it. Otherwise cheapest option is an aftermarket cooler like the above.

Thanks, the card probably is under warranty 8-10months old, but as it's just a bit noisy I don't think they would replace it.
I've tried giving it a clean and it did help a bit, it's not really that noisy it's just as it keeps not constant and become irritating.

I've just found a pic http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Pr...goryID=5&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=54&LanID=9

It's not the standard cooler that you see on most sites.

I've also come across this diy mod http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19493083-8800-GT-and-Zalman-VF900Cu.

I do have that fan doing nothing as it's on a broken card.

I would just need some Thermal tape.

I really don't want to waste much money on this PC as it's been due to be replaced for the last 12months when I get around to it.

a lot of "I"s there.
