I must admit I never read the post above and that may cure your ailments.
I played Bioshock (x1950 / 1.5GB RAM / P4 3.0Ghz) and it ran perfectly. Then the other day I had to reinstall my PC (Windows XP) as I had upgraded to Terminal Services 6.0 Client (and removed the uninstall) which was incompatable with Work (don't ask). Anyway I installed Sophos as that's what work was providing and it killed my system - making games such as Bioshock unplayable.
Removed Sophos and all worked fine - so heading back to Symantec which worked fine with no performance loss (or very little).
