nope, definitely not a painting... I remember all too well the fact I had to stop climbing or die... so I had a (fairly long) rest and that is one of dozens of pics I took while getting some feeling back in my legs and some air in my lungs :)

Thank you for the kind words - much appreciated :)

1: Llovely shot but there's not much detail in the shadows and the right side of the shot feels a little dark. I can see what you were attempting with the foreground interest but I'm finding my eye drawn down to the bottom of the frame - ideally you'd want those stones to be further into the picture and have a gap between them and the edge of the photo.

2: Nice enough as a snap but nothing special. Feels a bit cluttered and messy.

3: Nice colours but not that strong a composition. Too much sky in this one and a slightly wonky horizon.

4: Very nice, very pretty and a good, strong composition. Plenty of interest throughout the shot and lots to keep the viewer looking. Only criticism would be the dark areas in the bottom left and the very wonky horizon.

5: Again, a very nice, well composed shot. If you could bring the detail out of the shadow area on the shore and the trees, correct your wonky horizon and crop out the three stones in the bottom right (they're too close to the edge) I think you'll have a winner.

All in all pretty impressive stuff. You've done a good job of capturing a beautiful area of the country, something that's not as easy as it looks.

Thanks guys - especially Glitch, much appreciated
On second and third viewings, on properly calibrated monitors, the dark patches don't seem quite so dark. Bit of tweaking here, some colour balancing there, little bit of unsharp mask, etc etc.

Bootiful.

All of the above is something I need to learn more about.

I must admit looking at the pics at work and then again at home there is quite a difference in quality.

All of the above shots were taken with the 17-85 - it was a very cold weekend and the weather didnt lend itself to many lens changes

thought so - I starting hating my 17-85 after having a stack of wide 17mm images that looked like they were taken with a lens that has a thin layer of vasoline smeared over it - soft as hell :(

I have found that lens only gives good results at the longer end, which is why I am selling it

Fantastic shots though!
