A few Mac issues?

Hey guys, just got a few questions and a few problems, that I'd like to talk about.

Problems?

1. When using my Mac mini it laggs/stutters while using 1920x1080 resolution, I guess this is because Mac mini's aren't the best for hardware, my Mac has:

8GB DDR3 RAM / 2.4GHZ Core 2 Duo / Nvidia 320m

I didn't think it'd lagg but it does, it's most noticeable when you're maximizing and minimizing windows.

2. A while ago, I went and changed my account name and it had to transfer a lot of stuff over, and then when lion came about I didn't go ahead and do a clean install, i just 'upgraded' over the current OS so to speak.

I've been trying to play minecraft and what not, but for some strange reason, it isn't allowing me to apply texture packs, when I go to the correct directory, the files aren't there and so on. It's just awkward and annoying.

----------

Help if you don't mind?

1. Is there a way that I could install a brand new clean OS while maintaining my old files, I don't want to lose my full photoshop suite, office, etc, I have the office disks and stuff, but photoshop is my friends and he's on holiday at the moment, so is there a way to back everything up, maybe to an external drive? (I've got a 320gb external).

2. Is anyone else having problems with lagg on the larger resolutions? i'm having to run on 1280x800 at the moment (native resolution for mbp, 13", so i thought i'd go with that).

Thanks ever so much guys, Frag.

My 2009 2Ghz Mini drives hi-def 24" just fine - no lagging at all.

Sorry can't really help with the other bits - except maybe to say if you do an archive & install it won't overwrite your data.

I *think* Snow Leopard & LION default to this mode anyway. For example install Lion on a SL machine and it's effectively an upgrade. No choice to select an upgrade or clean install unless you create a bootable DVD and clear the hd first.

This probably will not solve anything, but I'm going to delete my current login profile and make a whole new one and see if that speeds up anything/does anything and whether it fixes my minecraft issue also.

>_<.

I've never had a lag problem with my Mini either. It's a 2009 with the 9400m and drives two displays - a 1680x1050 TFT and an old CRT at 1600x1200 with no problems.
