Hi All

Just a few quick question about the macbook pro.

Will be getting a 17" flavor very soon (its my first mac  ) and was wondering it comes with built in Airport Extreme 802.11g soon to be .11n also??
So what would be the purpose of getting an AirPort Extreme Card or am i missing the point as in there would not be a need to get one?

And also about the Airport Extreme Base Station is this just an 802.11n access point will built in switch so still would require a DSL modem/Router connected to a phone line to access the Internet?

And finally the most important question of all i have herd the 17" macbook pro suffers from the lid falling in on itself or falling back on itself when in certain positions on your nee ? is the hinge really that loose

+ can anyone recommend the glossy screen over the mat i have read it is much better? more vibrant color depth?

Thanks for any help can't wait to join the mac family or should i say the lightside. (coming from someone who has an FX-55 gaming machine running vista :o )

but OSX just looks so amazing so im going to port sides and see if im hooked over or not. Needed a lappy for collage anyways and with the event of bootcamp i saw the lite :D

It does come with built in wireless, the enabler for "N" comes on a cd with the airport base station. If you wanted to use "N" without the Apple base station you might have to pay to upgrade, but that might change.

Yes you would require your own modem.

I have heard about that problem, but nobody on these forums has reported it yet AFAIK.

gloss does give more vibrant colours but they are false so it wouldn't be good for picture/video editing. Plus it is more prone to picking up finger prints, Matte has better anti-glare protection.

I have the gloss macbook pro 15" and I have used it for design work with no problem. Everyone feels the need to explain how the colours would be false, but in my experience the colours have been fine for going to CMYK print so i challenge the naysayers to prove me wrong! Go for the gloss screen, it is far far better than the matte.

I wasn't naysaying it :) gloss does look better, just saying the gospel truth

i do quite a bit of video editing and i've always been told to go for matte finish screens. Haven't done any editing with my Macbook Pro as yet but will report back when I do.

Another thing people mention with glossy screens is the reflections. Unless you are working in an area with no direct lights or whatever, then you will get bad reflections of the screen.

This is all just what I have been told so it could be wrong.

Fair enough, I wasn't actually referring to you, but loads of people on other forums seem to really lay into the gloss screens. I think the bottom line is it is simply a matter of preference.

Agreed

thanks for all the replays guys :)

any more discussion on the gloss screen would be greatly aprishiated as i cannot choose on preference because i have never owned a gloss screen and have no apple store near me to check it out :(

And also anyone with a 17" who could report on the hinge question this would also be of great help.

Im getting so excited about getting it really cant wait :D OSX is going to look awsome on my 40" HDTV and im hoping its going to be faster then my current windows rig...
FX-55 2.6GIG
2GIG RAM
7800GTX

That is faster for a laptop i mean

The glossy screen definitely looks better, my flatmates Acer laptop has got a glossy screen and I think it looks very nice. Wish I had one on my iBook. :(

The first google result brings this up:

The Core2Duo and the RAM in the Macbook Pro will better then your current machine, but your PC will have the better graphics as the GPU is superior to the X1600.

only other thing i would say is that I asked the apple staff about the choice of screen and they said for graphics/video/photo editing definitely go for the matte finish. I would assume that they have more knowlegde about the products than I would so I took their word for it.

As I said before, it makes no difference. And I wouldn't trust those guys if I were spending near £2000 on a laptop, I'd do my own research first (which I did).

dont get me wrong im not slating either type of screen but goin on past experience with mates glossy screens they didn't compare to matte for the kind of work i'd be doing albeit they were a lot cheaper lappies than a mbp.

thanks for all the help with this guys :)

I'm still really divided on the Matt or glossy screen going to see if i can find any reviews that mention the glossy screen and see if i can find any comparisons.

Thanks for all comments

i have glossy and cant see any problems with it.
By people saying it doesn't produce the colours correctly, all you have to do is calibrate the screen correctly and save it as a profile :/ not hard!

yes this is what i was thinking, for things like photoshop ill just use custom profiles. But one thing i would like to ask with the gloss screen does it make the display appear dim ? as in less bright...

Thanks

Have the 17" pro here, do not have the glossy as use it under different light sources etc, but can say that the normal screen is great and slightly 'shinnier' than other laptop screens.
As for the screen flapping around, nope, non of that and get moved about everyday to and from work.
Absolutly an amazing bit of kit :D
