Hello there. First things first I'll give my specs.
Atlon 64 3000 winnie, (had it OC'd to 2.5GHz but at stock at the moment)
Gigabyte K8nf-9
1Gb geil value
6600gt
Antec TruePower 2.0 380W PSU (the one in the first sonata case)
17" CRT monitor

Basically i'm looking to upgrade my graphics card to play Oblivion, GRAW and other upcoming games. I want to know if my psu would be able to cope with the x1800xt. I don't really want to get a new psu because i can't really afford it.

Another thing, my monitor is a crappy CRT and i beleive the resolution does not go that high so would it be worth getting an x1800xt. May be way off there, i just remember reading something about that.

Thanks in advance
Hugh

Cheers for the reply. Just to double check, have you got the sonatta II or the first one. I got mine about a year and a half ago. OCUK sell the sonata II now and that comes with a more powerful psu.

Thanks

According to that site i my psu should be ok. Looks like i will be investing in an x1800xt pretty soon then. :)

Thanks

I got one more question about the x1800xt. My monitor recommended resolution is 1024x768 as its onlya 17inch. Would getting an 1800xt be a bit pointless because i won't be able to use higher res? Is there a cheaper card that would run games similarly due to the resolution limit?

Thanks

to be honest, for the resolution, It might be a little pointless. There are other good cards such as 7600gt which should be enough.

I am in the same boat as you, except I am buying an X1900XTX and I can only use 1024 - 768 at the moment, untill I can afford a new 19" TFT.
But if you buy a lesser card, it only means when you buy another monitor you will want another card to use its resolutions, and the X1800XT is not exactly a bad price, its well worth the money in every aspect.

I was just wondering, is a X1800 XT 256Mb a good card? I've been trying to find a review for it but I've only been finding reviews of 512Mb versions rather than the 256Mbs that OC has on offer.

Compared to the other cards I have been looking at (6600GT, 6800GS and the like for the price) I think for the extra £30 I'd spend, I thought I was getting a bargin?

It is a great value card. It is only slower than the 512mb at high resolutions

MY 19" TFT only goes to 1280x1024, so I assume I'll have plenty in reserve? How come I cant see many 512Mb cards about that are around the £250 mark?! It seems weird that the 256Mbs version is so cheap and the 512Mb seems to be more than twice the price in places....

If you are worried about the PSU - check the clearance PSU's

Hiper 480W Type-R (what I have) is only £30 and the 425W Hiper 4S series is only £17 - stonking price. Both are good PSU's too.

Depends what you're playing. Oblivion, Tomb Raider Legend and FEAR still chug a bit on an X1800 at 1280x1024 if you turn everything up to max detail.

To be honest, I'm personally not a fan of Tomb Raider and I havent heard of Oblivion...

Fear I currently do not have, but the games I do have (San Andrea's, The Simpsons, TOCA Race Drive, Unreal Torunament 2004 etc etc) I'm sure will play just fine.
If games dont, then a little tweak or overclock might just do the trick.. if not, a smaller res ;) Besides, its not for me in the long term ;)
