Just been going through some shots I've done over the last week or so, while I've been away from uni. Constructive criticism is appreciated, as always.

These were taken in Staithes, on the coast south of Newcastle ...

Bah, those grouse look a little overexposed on this monitor. Might have a play with those later.

:(

// EDIT // Done it now. A little, anyway.

The light on the grouse is a little too harsh and directional, also a catch light in the eye would add some life. Its amazing how much a little white dot can change an image! lol

They also look a bit soft. Good effort though. Next time try and get down lower for a 'grouse eye view' if possible.

Good b&w conversion on the man, with great detail in the face although maybe apply a tad more sharpening to really make him stand out. The OOF seagull is a bit of a distraction because the highlights are blown.

The little girl(?) is a nice shot.

Not much of a fan of 'effects' so I'll leave comments on the last two for others :)

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, the lighting wasn't exactly easy on the grouse shots - I don't have separate flash and the built-in one wouldn't have done anything in that light and at that distance, so I didn't bother (and I was shooting faster than it can sync anyway). The images are a bit softer than I would like - I guess that's just the result of using AI Servo and having my lens at full reach with a wide aperture.

The seagull was there intentionally, but I wasn't sure if it really worked, which is why I put it up for some comments. The little girl was my favourite of the day.

Harsh sunlight is a killer and its not always something you can get round unfortunately.

The seagull would be fine if there wasn't such a big hot spot on it. Maybe try and tone it down a bit in photoshop so your eye isn't drawn towards it so much.

:)
