A few setting changes on the 350d

Just wondering if I could get some help, want to change 2 things on the 350d and wondered if anyone knew how to do this by accessing the settings on the camera:

  • Is there anyway to turn the shutter sound off when you take a photo? This may be a daft question and I am perfectly prepared to get ripped for it, but is it an actual sound or is it part of the mechanism's in the camera that produce it? Reason I ask is going to Wimbledon on Friday and I want as little noise to come from the camera as possible.
  • How can I get my name embedded in the EXIF? I have been through the stickies at the top of the board and Lostkat has put some instructions on doing it with a shutter release cable...any other way though?

As always, help appreciated :)

Tom

You might want to edit away that first question :p some people here will be a bit miffed ^_^ :D

The answer is no though, it's all about the SLR baby!

As for the 2nd question, you can download canons remote capture software and from the settings in it with the camera attached via USB lead can add a copyright or owner info tag that puts itself in the IPTC area of every image jpeg or raw, this cannot be edited if you shoot raw so its a good way of keeping your images "yours"

:p lol - you can turn the beep off for the autofocus lock, but the shutter sound is an actual sound. I guess you are thinking of compacts and mobiles which emulate this sound, and hence can be switched off.

You could try this - it may work for the 350D, but no guarantees

EDIT - I just noticed that you've already seen Lostcat's instructions, however, I think that you've got the wrong end of the stick. You don't need a remote shutter release, just a normal USB cable to connect your camera to your computer. You then use the Remote Capture program that should have come with your 350D, if not I believe you can download it from Canon's site.

Cheers for the information on the other stuff, should be useful for things.

Do you know if there is such a thing for Nikon cameras? (My model is the D50)

lol that first question has got to be a late april fools right? What makes it even funnier is the fact you have a 70 - 200 L (professional lens)

hehe :D

2nd question I am not sure about. For some reason I seem to remember seeing my name in the exifs ages ago but I have never done anything to embed it. I will do a google for you now.

Edit:
Using Adobe's Bridge CS2 software my name is listed under the IPIC Core data but this will probably be reading from system information.
And again under the
Camera Data (Exif)

I am listed under Artist.

If this is reading from the system.. I do not know.

I'll be honest and admit its a genuine question. Being fair I am not a person who ever really wonders how something works, as long as it does work. Had the 350 for well over half a year now and I don't think I have ever sat down with it properly and examined the inside and out. Think I need to.

Never even held a proper SLR film camera so thats probably where the naivity lies.

Okay I didnt post this because I was unsure.. But I thought that the Exif could be uploaded into you're camera if you have used canon based software..

Apparently if you use the Canon Remote Capture program (apart of Canon Professional Viewer) then you're camera will upload you're name from the Locally connected PC's System information.

Dont worry about the question mate. Half the fun of a SLR is enjoying learning new bits along the journey.

same really on the first question
can't eat for grinning...
soz :p

p.s. quite correct on the 2nd question, if you edit the exif information in remote shooter, you save and take another shot and your name is added. no 3rd party software required.

Do they allow the use of SLRs in Wimbledon?

Apparently so :) I have had the girlfriend phoning the Club themself, I have checked the web-site and even emailed them.

They do a quick bag check as you go in (for explosive lunch boxes etc), but apart from that you are free to film and take photos for non-commercial use regardless of equipment.

The only people that can stop you from shooting are the people around you, if you obstruct them then they are allowed to ask you to stop. Fair do's I think...I will only have the 70-200 on me anyway and I would not call that obtrusive. Shall see though.

I feel that first question by me should have been posted on a far away forum somewhere where I may never have to show myself again ;)

Took my 300D and Sigma 70-300 lens last year no problems at all....

You can also take in a limited quantity of beer as well !

We got very little play cos of blasted rain (about 70 minutes) with no play on the outside courts which was a real shame as you can get really close to the players there.

The result is that with a 300mm lens you can't get closer than this:

Unless you have somewhere to sit like this:

This is on the Wimbledon website

Wimbledon FAQ

Code:
 [B]Can I bring my camera to Wimbledon?[/B]
Photographs (still or motion) taken inside the grounds
may only be used for private, not commercial, purposes.
There is no flash photography while play is in progress -
cameras with automatic flashes should not be used unless
the flash can be switched off.
Video recording is permitted so long as it does not interfere
with competitors or anyone else.
It may only be used for private, not commercial, purposes.

Hodders I like your first pc :P
